John “Jack” Vulgaris, Jr, 90

November 22, 2023

John “Jack” Vulgaris, Jr, age 90, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on November 22, 2023. He was a loving and devoted Father and Husband, who was married to Dee Vulgaris (who preceded him in death) for 65 years.

Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the oldest of 5 sons to John and Helen Vulgaris. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in 1952 and then briefly attended the University of Maryland. After leaving college, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was very proud of his military service having served overseas as a U.S. Embassy Guard in Germany and Yugoslavia.

Upon being honorably discharged as a Sergeant, he returned to Baltimore and began his professional working career with several banking and credit Companies. He was mostly known for his career as a District Sales Manager for J.I. Case Company. He had a very successful career, achieving many sales awards along the way. These awards allowed Jack and Dee to take company trips throughout the United States and the World, something that they enjoyed immensely.

Jack cultivated many relationships with people who became lifelong friends. Whether at their home in Lancaster or Fenwick Island, DE, their door was always open to anyone at any time.

An inquisitive and curious individual by nature, Jack had many interests. He was an avid reader who had a memory like a sponge. Being the son of parents who owned a restaurant in Baltimore, he naturally developed a skill in the kitchen and was an excellent cook. That included creating meals and delicacies with ingredients grown in his garden. Gardening and lawncare was a lifelong passion of Jack and Dee, as anyone who lived in their neighborhood could attest to.

He was a huge sports fan of all things Baltimore, which included the Ravens, Orioles, and the University of Maryland. He had many stories and memories during the time he owned season tickets, in the 1960s, for the then Baltimore Colts.

Jack and Dee also spent a considerable amount of their retired years at their beach home in Fenwick Island, DE. While there, if not relaxing, their time was spent with neighbors, crabbing from their boat, and enjoying the DELMARVA shore life.

Jack was a loyal and faithful servant of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Neffsville, PA. He developed many relationships with fellow congregants, as well as current and former clergy men and women of the Church.

Surviving are sons Brian (Ann Linkey), Ted (Christine), and brother Thomas, all of Lancaster. Preceding him in death are brothers Theodore, Richard, and Lawrence (Karen) from Baltimore, MD.

A casual viewing will take place from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, December 2, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Rd, Neffsville, PA. A memorial service will take place starting at 11:00 am, followed by a private family burial.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Peters Church Building Fund.

Dear Vulgaris Family,
Our deepest sympathies to you upon the passing of Jack.  We knew him from church.  He always said hello when he saw us.  He was quite the talker too!  We will miss seeing him in the Narthex at the coffee bar. May his memory be eternal.
With sympathy,
Mark & Angela Moshos

Simply put, Jack was a great man. He was a second father to me growing up with my best friend and brother from another mother, Brian. I will always carry fond memories of him. Rest in Peace Jack.
