John H. Russell, 90

September 04, 2020

John H. Russell (aka “Curly” to the Lancaster Ski Club), joined his daughter, and former partner in crime, Stephanie Oster-Canouse, for a huge party in heaven at the ripe old age of 90.

He will be well-remembered for his basketball career with the Lancaster Red Roses, as coach and infamous clipboard breaker for the St. Anne’s boys basketball team, a party bus legend on ski club trips, and the wine toaster to all who drove by his former Nolt Rd. residence!

Dad passed away surrounded by love from his wife and surviving daughters: Doris Russell, Shelley Rohde, Sherry Weaver, and Stacy Penaranda. He was so loved and will be sorely missed by his 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

In lieu of services, a life celebration will be planned later in the fall. Be prepared to come and share all of your good memories there.

My condolences to you and your family. Mrs. Russell was my elementary school teacher and I used to trick or treat every year there as a kid. Was very sorry to hear this news.

Shelly and family, so sorry to learn of the passing of your Dad. He was one of a kind. We will never forget all the Lancaster Ski Club trips that we were on with him over the years and the great times we enjoyed with him. He surely livened things up both on and off the slopes! We will miss you Curly!

Always will remember the trips with the ski club and his competitive spirit especially NASTAR racing.  I could never win but enjoyed racing against him.  I will be lighting a National Brand cigar in honor of Curly and will remember all of our good times together.  He was a great man and was honored to know him.  Our thoughts go out to you and your family.  Will miss him.

I did my toast to Curl a few days ago but one is just not enough. We got to ski the world with him from helicopter skiing in the Canadian Rockies to skiing and partying with World cup skiers in Argentina and Chile and everything in between. Yes he lived a full life making it to 90 and I will always cherish all the good times I was fortunate to share with him. Save me a seat in the back of the ski bus, Dad – I’ll bring the Tullamore Dew and Jameson Irish Whiskey! To Curly, Salud!!!

We never knew your beloved father, other than a wave and a toast of his wine glass as we drove by his home on many occasions. We have missed him since his move and are saddened by his passing. He was one of the beautiful people that make Lancaster County such a lovely place. Thank you for sharing his story with us and may he and Stephanie strike up the Heavenly band.

Always loved seeing, skiing and partying with Curly.  Such a pleasure to be around and always a gentleman.  I will miss him.  So glad to have known him for so many funfilled years.  I have so much sorrow for you, Shelley, and your family.
