Vivian C. Scifers, 86

July 25, 1933 - April 24, 2020

Vivian C. Scifers, 86, of Lancaster and Vero Beach, FL entered into God’s Kingdom on Friday, April 24, 2020 after a brief illness.

Vivian was born on July 25, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA to Edith and John T. Reuter. She was the youngest of seven girls. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School in December 1950. Vivian and her loving husband John Ronald (Ron) Scifers were married on October 4, 1952 and enjoyed over 67 wonderful years of marriage.

Vivian was truly a people-person who always looked for and found the good in everyone she met. She was selfless, always putting other’s needs before her own. Vivian was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Lancaster, where she previously served as a Sunday School teacher, and the Donegal Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a dedicated election poll worker for more than 40 years. She enjoyed visiting with her sons and grandchildren, playing cards, dancing, and playing Bocce at Valleybrook and Vista Royale.

Vivian is survived by her husband, sons, John Ronald Scifers, Jr. of Euharlee, GA and James Scifers of Bethlehem, daughter-in-law Lori Mitchell Scifers, and five grandchildren; Jacob, Jonathan, and Katherine of Sylva, NC and John III and Lindsay of Euharlee, GA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, a memorial service honoring Vivian’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it is Vivian’s sincerest wish that each of you enjoy the activity that makes you happiest and remember that good health, family, and friends are the most precious gifts of all.

I met Vivian and Ron in the late 1950’s in Maryland when Vivian was working and Ron was attending the University of Maryland. I lost touch, except for Christmas cards and a visit to their later move to Lancaster. I’ve attempted to contact Ron and found Vivian’s 2020 notice just after my wife passed a month before Vivian. I have great memories of Ron and Vivian during those 50’s and early 60’s. Vivian was such a fun and sweet lady, and an Eagles football rooter. I’ve tried to reach Ron Sr or their sons recently, with no success. I have, as Vivian and Ron has, moved a number of times. I’m currently in Uxbridge MA.

I remember meeting Aunt Viv and Uncle Ron in the late 1960s. They were young, with two little boys, vivacious and kind. Aunt Viv took time to call, to remember everyone’s birthday and to talk to you. When we were together it is was if I were the only person in the room. Happy memories of Thanksgivings and Reuter reunions at the Scifers home in Lancaster. “God comes to us through other people” and He shone through Viv. My sincerest condolences to Ron and the wonderful family they created. Connie McGarry Tatman

Aunt Vivian was like a mother to me.  My mother—her next oldest sister–died suddenly 41 years ago.  As Vivian was close with my mother, she stepped in looked after my brothers and I, albeit from Lancaster, from that point forward.  I did not feel like my mother was fully gone as long as Vivian was there.  She always sent birthday cards and notes throughout the year letting us know she was thinking of us.  I spoke to her many times, often long phone conversations, which I think helped both us both deal with the loss of my mother.  I can never thank her enough for her care and concern.  She was one of best people I have ever known.

Aunt Viv was a remarkable person, defining love and selflessness better than any person i have every known.  She had the ability to make you feel  that you were the most important person and she did this for so many people all at the same time.
Of course, she will be missed so much – my prayer is that the generations who come behind her will remember her example and model it in their circles of influence.
You ran the good race Aunt Viv

The sweetest of all the Reuter girls.  Vivian was the most caring selfless person, she never forgot a birthday, or anniversary for this very large family.  She was amazing and loved by us all.  Her last wish was an epic testimony of of how she lived her life and loved us all.  My deepest condolences to Uncle Ron, and all the family.  We will miss her.  Love Steve and Paulette Tramill

My Aunt Vivian was such an amazing person. She would send a card or call at every birthday. I always looked forward to talking to her. Aunt Viv will always have a special place in my heart, and the world was a better place because of her.
