Leon J. (Fritz) Hummer, 87
May 11, 2017
Leon J. (Fritz) Hummer exchanged time for Eternity May 11, 2017, at the age of 87 at Hospice of Mount Joy.
Leon, who preferred the name Fritz given to him many years ago, was born into the loving home of John and Ruth (Johns) Hummer, (both deceased), on April 7, 1930, in Lincoln, PA.
Fritz had a need to be busy, so at a young age, he was a newspaper carrier for Lancaster Newspapers Inc. and worked at various stores in Ephrata throughout his teen years.
After graduating from Ephrata High School in 1948, Fritz enlisted in the United States Navy and served until 1952 during the Korean Conflict. Fritz was honored to serve his country and was proud to fly the United States flag on his property.
Fritz worked at the Lancaster Newspapers for 40 years in the composing room, learning the new techniques as the technical world grew. He was a faithful and steady worker. He was well known for his “Corny Jokes’’ at work and throughout the room you would hear “Oh, Fritz’’ We will miss that twinkle in his eye and that wry sense of humor.
In his younger years, Fritz enjoyed fishing, boating, bowling and camping. Fritz liked doing word search puzzles. He also sang in church choir at Mount Joy Church of God and Trinity ECC, Lititz. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Oregon Pike.
Fritz is survived by his beloved wife of 35 years, Lois J. (Horst) Hummer. Two step-sons, Dr. David Rosenfeld (wife Deb), Drumore; Dan Rosenfeld, Lancaster; Granddaughter, Emily Rosenfeld, Drumore; and a Sister, Dottie Allen of Tucson, AZ.
Preceded in death by his sister, Mildred (Hummer) Zimmerman, and a brother, Clayton.
Absent from the body – present with the Lord. Well done thy good and faithful servant.
Friends will be received by his family on Thursday, May 18, 2017 from 6-7PM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, with the Memorial Service to follow at 7PM, the Rev. Dr. Michael Rogers officiating. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Fritz’s memory to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
