Edith June Grubb Butz, 89

Edith June Grubb Butz, 89, of Houston, Texas, and formerly of Lancaster, PA went to be with her heavenly father on February 8, 2011.  Edith was born in High Point, North Carolina, and as a child resided in Marietta and Lancaster PA. On August 26, 1939, she married Vincent J. Butz, in Lancaster, PA.  In 1947, they moved to Houston, Texas, and after a loving marriage of 58 years, Vincent predeceased her on November 8, 1997. She was also predeceased by three older brothers and two sisters.  Edith Grubb Butz had ancestral roots dating back to Daisy Grubb, of the Grubb Mansion and her family, connected with the Mount Hope Coalworks.

Edith is survived by her daughter, Dr. Sue Ellen O’Hara, of Houston, Texas; and her son, Ian N. Strauss and his wife, Janine, of Boise, Idaho, and two step-grandchildren.

In addition to being a loving mother and wife, Edith accomplished many other business, social, and religious goals during her active life.  She graduated from the University of Houston, in 1957, receiving a degree in Restaurant and Private Club Management.  She served as a manager of The Houston Country Club, and the Criterion Club for several years, retiring from the latter.

In Houston, she was also a charter founder of St. Cecilia Catholic Church.  She was also a co-founder with her late sister, Ruth, of The Country Playhouse, which still functions as a successful community playhouse in West Houston.  She also devoted time to the Girl Scouts and Brownies, and served as their leader from 1950-56.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11am on Thursday June 9, 2011 at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA 17603.  Friends and family may visit with the family at the church from 10-11am. Interment will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made  in any amount to: American Cancer Society, High Plains Division, Inc, P.O.
