Joan Iris Lockwood, 98

January 17, 1927 - July 15, 2025

Joan Iris Lockwood, a cherished matriarch and beloved member of the Lancaster community, peacefully departed this world on July 15, 2025, at the age of 98. Born on January 17, 1927, in Mt. Joy, she brought light and joy to those around her throughout her remarkable life.

Joan was a dedicated piano teacher, sharing her profound love for music with countless friends, family, and students, nurturing their talents with a kind and gentle spirit. Her passion for music extended beyond the classroom, as an accomplished opera singer and played piano at various local churches, ensuring that her melodic presence was felt throughout the community.

An accomplished artist, Joan’s talent as a skilled painter led her to create and sell many pieces, while generously gifting others to family and friends. She encapsulated the essence of love and creativity in all her endeavors. Beyond her artistic pursuits, Joan was a dedicated member of Bethel AME Church, and she volunteered her time with the NAACP, advocating for justice and equality in a world that she deeply cared for.

As a beloved mother and grandmother, Joan took on the role of matriarch, guiding and nurturing her children and grandchildren with wisdom and affection. Her love for travel, cruising, and the thrill of visiting casinos added vibrancy to her life. An avid reader, she found joy in classic literature and cherished old classic movies, savoring the tales of yesteryear.

Joan will be remembered not only for her immense contributions to music and art but also for her unwavering love, kindness, and impact on those fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of many, a resounding melody that will never fade. She will be sorely missed by her son David Lockwood of Carlisle, grandchildren, Charmaine Lockwood Anderson, wife of Gregory Anderson, of Lancaster, Ayanna Lockwood of Reading, Stanisha Lockwood of Lancaster, and David Felder of Lancaster, and great grandchildren, Thomas Small “TJ” Jr. husband of Analicia, of Lancaster, Capricia Lockwood, Malik Lockwood, Kaleel Lockwood, and Noriyanna Lockwood, all of Reading, along with her nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in passing by her parents, John L. and Frances (Bailer) Skipper, her husband, Stephen Lockwood, their daughter, Stephanie Lockwood Holmes, and sisters, Emma, Romaine, Aurora.

A Home Going Service celebrating Joan will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, beginning at 11:30 AM, at the Charles F. Snyder III Funeral Home & Crematory, 2421 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA 17584. The family will welcome guests from 10 AM until the service. To the family: I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m sure that there are many good memories to help sustain you during this difficult time.
For me, Joan was always a joy to talk with and the dedication and passion she brought to playing the piano during church services was inspiring. When I close my eyes, I can see her playing at Bethel. She will undoubtedly be missed.
