Born in Lancaster on the 22nd of September, 1959 and passed away in Lancaster on the 23rd of July. Cynthia was a Christian, baptized in the Church of The Brethren. A mother, educator, medical professional, scholar, and a champion for the underdog. Cynthia spent decades in the medical profession caring for thousands of patients in private practice and Veterans through the Veteran’s Administration. Cynthia graduated from Hahnemann University in 1984 as a Physician Assistant Certified (PA-C), among the first in Pennsylvania to practice with such a license. Cynthia applied her skills and care in various medical fields from family practice to cardiac care at Milton Hershey Medical Center. She retired from practicing medicine after 20 years at the Veteran’s Administration in York, PA in 2022. In 2020, Cynthia earned her PhD and taught in the Physician Assistant Program at Elizabethtown College in 2022.

Jerome “Jerry” I. Hoff, 77
Jerome “Jerry” I. Hoff, age 77, passed away at his Landisville, PA home on June 30, 2025. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Born in Norristown, PA, he was the son of the late John Hoff and Frances (Rotay) Hoff.

Jerry graduated from Bishop Kenrick High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in history from Penn State University. He met his wife, Julie, at college. After their marriage, they settled in Lancaster and Jerry began his career while serving in The Pennsylvania National Guard. He obtained an accounting certificate from Franklin and Marshall College and went on to become a Certified Public Accountant. For over 40 years, Jerry had a distinguished career in accounting, working both in public firms and in private industry. He retired from Murray Insurance Company as Controller. Following his retirement, he continued to do accounting work for small businesses and to provide tax services.

Linus Hughes, 49
Linus Hughes passed away Sunday, July 13, 2025 at Lancaster General Hospital. Linus suffered a respiratory emergency at home on July 4, 2025. Linus was admitted to the ICU at LGH but, despite all efforts by his care team he sustained a severe anoxic brain injury from which he could not recover. As was his wish, Linus gave the wonderful gift of organ donation on July 14, 2025. This final gift was very much in line with Linus’s life of selfless love and giving. While the sadness of this loss is immeasurable, Linus’s family is comforted knowing the loss of their beloved brother, son, and partner will save lives and prevent other families from experiencing the grief they are experiencing now.

Born in Berlin, Germany in 1945, Werner “Vern” Marten came to the United States in 1966 on a Fulbright scholarship. He attended Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he studied business and history. While still in school, Vern worked for the Paul Todd Spice Extraction Company, where he discovered a lifelong passion for food ingredients, flavors, and spices. This passion would lead to a successful and dynamic career. He joined McCormick Spice Company, which took him from coast to coast. Later, an old McCormick colleague recruited him to join Flavors of North America, managing flavor sales across the northeastern United States and in Europe until his retirement in 2002.

She was a faithful member of St. Phillip the Apostle Catholic Church, Lancaster for the past 30 years. She enjoyed word puzzles and monthly get-togethers with high school friends. Lois’s greatest joy was her family. She regularly attended sporting events and music performances for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she enjoyed cooking and hosting family gatherings for birthdays and holidays. Traveling to the beach with her family was a tradition that carried on for over 40 years, including just a few weeks ago. She was always in her element in a beach chair with her toes in the sand and a crossword in her hand.

Born in Johnstown, PA, Dolores married her high school sweetheart, Gene Simasek on August 8, 1959. Together, they raised 6 children in Havertown and West Chester, PA. Dolores was a devoted and loving mother to Bernie (Sara), Steve (Linda), Beth Conway (Frank), Lori Elwood (Steve), Amy McEvoy (Bob) and Holly Sciortino (Nate) as well as 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s various interests such as 4-H, the Philadelphia Boys Choir, Boy Scouts, musical instruments, sports and dance.
