William J. Doherty
William J. Doherty, 77, of Quarryville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2026, at Lancaster General Hospital.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Bill was the son of the late James and Mary (Gavin) Doherty. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Muir) Doherty, with whom he shared 57 years of faithful marriage, building a life marked by love, commitment, and devotion to family.
Bill graduated from Dunmore High School and worked as a professional plumber before retiring as a wastewater plant supervisor with Aqua Pennsylvania. He proudly served his country in both the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve. He also served his community as a volunteer firefighter with Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Company and Malvern Fire Company, reflecting a lifelong commitment to serve.
A loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather, Bill found his greatest joy in the people he loved. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Mary Lou Frazier (Rick Gomez); his son, Brian Doherty (Susan); and his cherished grandchildren, Matthew Frazier, Amanda Doherty, and Christopher Doherty. He is also survived by his brother, James Doherty, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Janice Doherty.
Bill was known for his deep love and unwavering devotion to his family. He took great pride in his work and was respected for his wisdom, perseverance, and sense of humor. An avid railroad enthusiast and model railroader, he delighted in the history, craftsmanship, and beauty of trains. He also had a lifelong appreciation for antique and classic automobiles.
A passionate Phillies fan, Bill loved the game of baseball and especially treasured the memories made with family at the ballpark. He coached Little League when his children were young, sharing not only his love of the game but also lessons in teamwork, character, and perseverance.
Those who knew Bill will remember a man who worked hard, loved deeply, served faithfully, and found joy in life's simple blessings. His steady presence, quiet strength, and steadfast spirit left a lasting mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
While his family and friends mourn his passing, they give thanks for a life well lived and for the countless memories that will continue to bring comfort and joy. Bill's legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the community he served, and the many lives he touched.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bill's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum, organizations that reflect causes and interests that were meaningful to him.
A Memorial Celebration of Bill's Life will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Avon Grove Church of the Nazarene, 240 State Road, West Grove, PA 19390.
Family and friends are warmly invited to gather in remembrance, gratitude, and celebration of a life well lived.
