Walter H. Offermann, 89, a resident of Moravian Manor, passed away on April 5, 2026. A native of New York City, Walt was the husband of Shirley Vandegrift Offermann, with whom he would have celebrated 67 years of marriage this month. Walt was the son of Henry and Wilma Offermann.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Robert Offermann of Springfield, PA; a daughter, Kathryn Markam (Glenn) of Manlius, NY; grandchildren Erica Offermann, John Markam, and Kristi Markam; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Markam-Howard. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Gill of Palm Harbor, FL.
A 1958 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Walt met Shirley at Penn, and they married the year following their graduation. During his undergraduate years, Walt was a member of the Penn Heavyweight Crew. After graduation, he competed for the New York Athletic Club (NYAC) rowing program. A distinguished Military ROTC graduate, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the USAFR.
Following graduation, he joined Armstrong's Insulation Division as a sales trainee. After a leave of absence for active military service, Walt returned to Armstrong with an initial assignment in the New York District Office.
After various sales and field management roles, Walt moved to Lancaster in 1974, where he assumed responsibility for Armstrong's North American Insulation Business Unit. He played an active role in the National Insulation Association, holding leadership positions on both the Associate and Distribution Committees.
Prior to his retirement from Armstrong, he joined the Human Resources Department as a member of the Organizational Development group. Walt also served as Vice President and General Sales Manager of the Specialty Products and Insulation Company, then a unit of the Irex Corporation.
A loyal Penn alumnus, Walt was an active member of alumni clubs in both Baltimore and Lancaster. He chaired the Lancaster Secondary School Committee for twenty years and served a term as President of the Lancaster Club. For several years, he was also a member of the Executive Committee of the University's General Alumni Society.
A longtime member of Highland Presbyterian Church, Walt served on the Personnel Committee and the Board of Trustees. His additional community involvement included the United Way, the local Heart Association, and the Easter Seal Board. In 1985, he was elected to the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners and was later appointed to the Township Civil Service Commission.
After moving to Moravian Manor in 2012, Walt served on the Residents Council, becoming President in 2015. In that role, he also served a two-year term on the Manor's Board of Trustees.
During retirement, Walt and Shirley enjoyed several trips to Europe, highlighted by a 2001 visit to Northern Germany and time spent with extended family. For many years, they spent the winter months at their home at The Vines in Estero, FL. Summer vacations were spent with family in Stone Harbor, Shirley's favorite spot on the Jersey Shore. Longtime members of the Lancaster Country Club, golf was a favorite pastime.
