Shirley M. Sargent (Shutter), 88, formerly of Strasburg, passed away on July 2, 2026 at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Florence (Singer) Groff.

Shirley enjoyed music and traveling. She was proud of her perfect driving record, especially since she liked to drive fast. In addition to keeping a spotless home and raising her children, Shirley cherished her job as head housekeeper at the former Congress Inn and cleaning for elderly in assisted living.

Shirley is survived by her daughters: Dorothy Atzeff, companion of Jere Long, Donna Gill, wife of the late Brian Gill, and Linda Barr, wife of Robert; stepson: John Sargent, husband of Deb; a daughter-in-law: Cynthia Sweigart; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; 5 nieces & nephews; and numerous cousins throughout the East Lampeter and Paradise Township areas.

Shirley was preceded in death by 3 husbands: Ronald Sweigart, James Sargent and Dennis Shutter; a son: Carl H. Sweigart; a stepson: James Sargent; 1 grandchild: Jason Gill; siblings: Patricia Watterson and Robert Groff; and 5 nieces & nephews.

A viewing will take place from 10-11 AM with a Funeral Service to begin at 11 AM on Monday, July 13, 2026 at Bachman Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 7 S. Decatur St, Strasburg, PA 17579. Shirley will be laid to rest at Conestoga Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to Morning Star Hospice, 2225 Sycamore St, Suite 410, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
