Shirley A. Melendez

Shirley A. Melendez, age 82, of Lancaster, entered the gates of Heaven on September 1, 2026. Born in Elizabethtown, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Catherine (Krause) Miley. She shared over 32 years of love and memories with her devoted husband, Radames Melendez. 

Shirley dedicated her life to the service of others, exhibiting an unwavering commitment to uplift those around her. As the cofounder and Administrative Director of Esperanza Hope for the Future Counseling Service, Inc., which she established with her husband, in 2012, Shirley profoundly influenced many lives through her compassionate approach to mental health care. Her devotion to helping others was evident not only in her professional pursuits but also in her personal passions. 

For over 25 years, Shirley graced the Estee Lauder counter at BonTon, where she found great joy in enhancing the beauty and confidence of countless women. Her artistry extended beyond cosmetics, as she was also a gifted painter in her youth, often finding solace and inspiration in her creative endeavors. An avid gardener, Shirley nurtured both flowers and friendships, embodying the essence of beauty and hope in all aspects of her life. 

Furthermore, Shirley's compassionate heart led her to pastor throughout the United States, where she inspired many with her faith and boundless encouragement. A true beacon of hope, she tirelessly advocated for the well-being of others and sought to instill optimism in even the most challenging circumstances. 

Shirley is survived by her devoted husband, Radames Melendez, who stood proudly by her side throughout their journey together, her son Steve Martin of Lititz, a stepson, Radames Melendez, Jr. of Miami FL, her sister Sue Jansen, and her beloved poodle Pumpkin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at San Juan Bautista Catholic Church in Lancaster beginning at 11 AM, Fr. Luis Rodriguez as celebrant. A viewing will be held prior to Mass beginning at 9 AM. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, parkinsons.org.
