Russell J. Anstead, Sr., 88, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Russell C. and Genevieve (Stiles) Anstead. He was the devoted husband of Diana (Mohr) Anstead, with whom he shared more than 67 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on faith, family, and unwavering love.
Russell dedicated over four decades of his career to the Phone Company, where he worked from 1956 until his retirement in 1997. His strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to providing for his family were qualities that defined not only his career but every aspect of his life.
A man who found joy in the simple pleasures, Russell took tremendous pride in caring for his home and yard. His beautifully maintained lawn was the envy of the neighborhood, and he could often be found riding his beloved John Deere tractor, tending to his landscaping and gardens. He enjoyed firing up the grill for family barbecues, gathering around the table for spirited games of dominoes, and spending time camping with those he loved.
Russell was deeply invested in his community and in the lives of young people. He generously volunteered as both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, served as an instructor with the PAL Rifle Club, worked as a boxing instructor, and dedicated time as a Range Officer. He was also a constant presence at his sons' sporting events, offering encouragement, guidance, and unwavering support. Above all else, Russell's greatest priority was providing for his family and ensuring they knew they were loved.
His Catholic faith was an important part of his life, and he was a faithful member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
In addition to his beloved wife, Diana, Russell is survived by his five sons: Russell J. Anstead, Jr., of Lancaster; Christopher L. Anstead and his wife, Debbie, of Baldwin, NY; Jeffrey T. Anstead and his wife, Kathleen, of Shohola, PA; Kevin J. Anstead and his wife, Cavalyn, of Lake Grove, NY; and Keith R. Anstead and his companion, Suzanne Coyle, of Rockville Centre, NY. He is also lovingly remembered by his six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends whose lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and steady example.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 501 E. Orange Street, Lancaster, PA 17602, Lancaster, PA. Interment will follow at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Russell's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church or The American Cancer Society.
Russell will be remembered as a hardworking husband, a devoted father and grandfather, a faithful friend, and a man who found fulfillment in caring for his family, serving his community, and making every place he called home a little more beautiful. His quiet strength, generous spirit, and enduring love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
