Robert "Bob" Francis Sugra

Robert "Bob" Francis Sugra, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 84 on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Keystone Villa Ephrata.

Born and raised in Allentown, Bob was the son of the late Frank and Anna (Zemanek) Sugra. He was the devoted husband of Lorraine "Lori" (Stofko) Sugra, with whom he celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 8, 2026.

Bob was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Allentown Central Catholic High School in 1960 and earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1966. In his younger years, Bob played the clarinet and saxophone.

Following graduation, Bob dedicated 35 years of service as an employee of Pennsylvania Power & Light (PPL). Bob held many positions within the company in Marketing and as an Area Operating Manager in Wilkes Barre and Lancaster before retiring in 2001.

Active in his community, Bob gave generously of his time to the Lancaster Jaycees, Millersville Lions Club, Northeast Rotary Club and Saint Phillip the Apostle Men's Club. He was highly involved in youth sports, supporting Little League baseball and competitive summer swimming programs at Millersville Lions Club and Conestoga Community Pools.

Bob was a runner and participated in many 5-mile road races across Lancaster County during the 1970's and 80's. Perhaps his biggest personal accomplishment, aside from his family, was running the Marine Corps Marathon in 1981.

An avid Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies fan, Bob loved the outdoors. He took pride in caring for his lawn and landscape no matter which house he and Lori lived in. Long ago (as a side gig), Bob owned a tree farm and landscaping business with his best pal John Jaczynski. When Bob's kids were young, he would take them out fishing. The first day of trout season was always a big deal as he would wake everybody up at 3:00AM to ensure getting the best spot at the stream (which he was sure to have scouted out the week prior). Many late afternoons in the summer were also spent fishing off the Safe Harbor dam catching and releasing catfish.

In the kitchen, Bob was great at burning Sunday morning pancakes with a side of scrapple. What he was best at though was baking homemade bread. If you hosted a holiday party, you were guaranteed to be greeted with a loaf of Bob's bread fresh out of the oven in a brown paper bag.

Bob was a big character at parties and had the driest sense of humor out of anyone you would ever meet. He had the innate ability to tell a joke that was more of a story but held your attention until the final punch line.

Family vacations in the summer were always spent at the beach. Whether it was Ocean City MD, Bethany Beach DE, Sea Isle City NJ, or the Outer Banks, Bob could always be found sitting in his beach chair reading his book (either chewing a piece of Dentyne gum or with a toothpick in his mouth), a cold beer by his side and occasionally looking up to watch the girls go by.

In his retirement, Bob enjoyed playing golf (but not very well!), reading, fitness, his model train set, playing pinochle, scrabble (300+ point winner!), reading the daily Lancaster newspaper, and watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune in his recliner. He and Lori also spent time at Myrtle Beach each year with friends.

Bob was a faithful parishioner of Saint John Neumann Catholic Church and previously belonged to Saint Philip the Apostle and Our Mother of Perpetual Help parishes.

In addition to his beloved wife, Lori, he is survived by three children: Susan Buterbaugh of Zionsville, IN; Christopher Sugra (Jennifer) of Millersville, PA; and Matthew Sugra (Melissa) of Hainesport, NJ; a son in law (Dennis Buterbaugh); eight grandchildren: John Buterbaugh (Alesia Lewis) and Josh Buterbaugh, Anna (fiancé Jackson Prevost), Lily, Maya, Paige, Owen, and Nate Sugra, and a great grandson Jackson Buterbaugh; two sisters, Patricia Miller (Len) of Sinking Spring and Carol Millets (Frank) of Macungie; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Peter Millets.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint John Neumann Catholic Church located at 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster PA on Tuesday November 24 at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass. A private interment will be held at Saint Joseph's New Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bob's memory to the Lewy Body Dementia Association https://lbda.org.
