Robert John Barnett, Jr., PhD, 89, a long-time resident of Lancaster, passed away during the evening of Monday, September 21, 2026 at Homestead Village. He was the devoted husband of the late Anna Louise (Kennamer) Barnett, who preceded him in death in 2021.
Born in White Plains, NY in 1936, he was a son of the late Dorothy (Miltner) & Robert J. Barnett, Sr. He grew up in Queens, NY, but came to Lancaster in 1963 to begin his teaching career at Franklin & Marshall College. Upon his retirement Dr. Barnett was a tenured Professor of Classics, having taught at F&M College for 40 years.
He is survived by his sons, Robert N. and Gregory Barnett, their respective spouses, Laura and Sylvia, and four grandchildren, Nicholas, Alec, Harry, and Lydia. He is also survived by his younger brother Guy.
Funeral services for Dr. Barnett will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Barnett may be made to the Robert J. Barnett Translation Prize in Latin Poetry at F&M College, by contacting the College Advancement Office (https://www.fandm.edu/advancement/).
