Richard “Homer” Weaver—known to all simply as Homer—passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at the age of 90, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Homer grew up in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, one of seven children in a modest home filled with energy, responsibility, and resilience. From the age of seven, when he began selling newspapers at a trolley stop, Homer learned that work was not just a necessity—it was a way of life. That mindset stayed with him forever.
Homer graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1953, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional track athlete, winning the state championship in the mile at Penn State and earning numerous other victories in distance events. Though he initially passed on multiple scholarship opportunities, he ultimately attended Geneva College, where he continued his success on the track team.
In college, Homer met Miriam “Mim” Johnson. Their relationship began with equal parts frugality and adventure—he famously paid her 35-cent admission to a football game, then hopped the fence and met her inside. That moment marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership. They were married on March 9, 1957, and shared 69 years of marriage rooted in faith, commitment, and love.
Homer dedicated his professional life to education, teaching high school science at Chichester and Yeadon High Schools for 35 years. Even while teaching full-time, he maintained multiple jobs, including a paper route, snow plowing, rototilling, painting, and more—always with the goal of providing stability and opportunity for his family. After retiring from teaching at age 57, he continued working for 18 more years as a bus driver for Delaware County Christian School.
In 1971, Homer and Mim founded Flag Products Discount Company out of their home—an entrepreneurial venture that grew from a simple need into a lasting business that continues today.
Homer was known for his ingenuity, energy, and willingness to help anyone at any time. He could build, fix, or figure out nearly anything—from constructing additions to homes, to creating elaborate backyard forts for his children, to repairing cars, or lending a hand wherever it was needed. He lived by simple but powerful principles like: “Work is its own reward,” “Everything matters,” and “If you aren’t sure how to help, grab a broom.”
He was also adventurous and full of humor—whether hitchhiking long distances with little money, raising unique pets, playing practical jokes, or delivering perfectly timed one-liners. His quick wit and “Dad jokes” were core to his character.
Above all, Homer was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He and Mim built a life centered on family, creating countless memories through camping trips up and down the East Coast, simple traditions, and time spent together. He was generous not only with his resources, but with his time, wisdom, and steady presence.
A man of deep faith, Homer lived out his Christian beliefs through his actions—serving others, loving his neighbors, and remaining grounded in honesty, gratitude and purpose throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Miriam “Mim” Weaver; his children, Mark (Mariellen), Eric (Catherine), and Lauren (Greg); and his siblings, Walt, David, and Lis.
Together, Homer and Mim were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen, and his siblings, Bob, Barbara, and Lois.
Homer’s legacy is one of hard work, honesty, generosity, and unwavering dedication to family. His life stands as a testament to the idea that a meaningful life is built not from what you have, but from how you live and how you serve others.
A service to celebrate Homer’s life will be held at Garden Spot Village in New Holland, Pennsylvania on Saturday April 18, 2026, at 11 am.
