Raymond C. Schweisguth, Jr.

Raymond C. Schweisguth Jr. died in Lancaster General Hospital on July 16, 2026, following a sudden and brief illness, surrounded by his family.

Ray was born to Raymond C. Schweisguth Sr. and Mildred née Alleg of Flushing, Queens, New York in 1935. He received a bachelor's degree at Hofstra University in 1957 and began teaching mathematics at Jerusalem Avenue Junior High School in Bellmore, New York later that year. He served in the Coast Guard Reserve from 1958 to 1966. He received a master's degree in mathematics at Adelphi University in 1964. 

In 1968 Ray married Anne Kundratis, also a mathematics teacher, who had started teaching in the same school as he. They moved to Swiftwater, Pennsylvania, in the Pocono Mountains, in 1970. Ray introduced the first classes in calculus and, later, computer science at East Stroudsburg High School, and Ray and Anne ran a small organic farm which produced most of the food for their family of six, including meat, vegetables, fruit, honey, maple syrup, wine and cider. 

Ray was also a dedicated musician and played professionally part-time throughout his life. For many years, he played guitar in Paul Hubbell's band at Pocono Manor, Fernwood and other area resorts, and banjo with the Dixie Gents at the Tannersville Inn and at the annual Celebration of the Arts in Delaware Water Gap. 

In what little time he left free, Ray hiked with his sons and their Boy Scout troops, skied cross-country in the woods around his farm, and swam and snorkeled in tropical waters around the world with his wife. After his retirement, Ray and Anne traveled in dozens of countries, often on boats, and sometimes with their children and grandchildren. 

After 55 years on their farm, Ray and Anne moved to Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster County in 2025. 

Ray is survived by his wife; his children, David (wife Penelope Chua), of San Francisco, CA, Michael (wife Ann), of Shoreview, MN, Allison Johnson (husband Ethan), of Richmond, VA, and Melissa, of Hyattsville, MD; granddaughters, Amelia, Daphne and Josie; and his sister, Marion Lang (husband Warren), of Saint Paul, MN.

Ray will be cremated and his ashes scattered. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a donation to Meals on Wheels, for which Ray delivered meals for many years.
