Naomi A. Baker

Naomi Arlene Baker (née Charles) passed away at Luther Acres care facility in Lititz on November 5. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Naomi is survived by her son James E. Baker and his wife, Dawn; son Robert C. Baker and his wife, Laura; grandson Ian; grandson James and his wife, Sreeja; granddaughter Jessica and her husband, Frank, and great-grandchildren Lynn and Liam; her sister, Kay Charles, and brother J. Stanley Charles and his wife, Pat; and niece Connie and her family. She was predeceased by her much-loved husband, Elwood, and daughter, Bonnie Masters.

Born on a farm in Manor Township, she was the daughter of the late H. Stanley and Miriam S. Charles. Naomi graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1949, where she played field hockey and was a member of the National Honor Society. Soon after Naomi and “Bake” were married, his studies in electronics and various job postings took the adventurous young couple all over the United States. They lived in many different locales, including Chicago, Long Island, and briefly, Canada. As they raised three children, their favorite places included St. Albans, Vermont, where they both enjoyed skiing in the winter and fishing and boating on Lake Champlain in the summer. Naomi was especially adept at frying perch and stuffing bass with crab meat for dinners eaten at lakeside picnic tables. She also loved the star-filled night skies over the desert near Alamogordo, New Mexico, and enjoyed cooking meals spiced with the local green chiles when the family lived there in the 1960s. Naomi was a good organizer, which served her well, as she often handled the arrangements for moving companies, found good public schools for her three children, and dealt with realtors from coast to coast when Bake was working in other locations, sometimes overseas. These skills proved valuable when she worked as a teller in various banks.

Throughout her life, she was an avid reader whose wide-ranging tastes ran from serious nonfiction to novels of all kinds, whether popular escapes or literary heavyweights. She enjoyed a variety of sports, and attended both Winter and Summer Olympic Games, as well as some NCAA March Madness contests. She was also an enthusiastic competitor in the card games Horse, Cribbage, and Sequence. Naomi fully enjoyed life—whether trekking through the Australian Outback, riding a riverboat down the Amazon, or eating conch salad in the Bahamas—and was always ready with a laugh, and remained curious about the world until the end. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Naomi’s memory to your favorite charity.
