Miles V. Martin, 93, passed away on April 1, 2026. Born September 24, 1932, at Lancaster General Hospital, he was the son of the late Harry Metfett and Gertrude (Lichty) Martin.
Miles attended Ranck Avenue and Wickersham Elementary Schools, Edward Hand Junior High, and graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1950. During his youth, he was active in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Life Scout, and worked in the kitchen at Camp Chicquetan in 1949 and 1950.
After high school, he began working at Armstrong Floor Plant in October 1950. During this time, he was also an amateur boxer, notably winning a match at St. Joseph’s Catholic Club just hours before deploying with the U.S. Army. He completed Infantry Basic Training and Armored Leadership Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, serving with the 3rd Armored Division. He later trained a basic company and deployed to Germany in October 1953, where he was assigned to the 42nd Armored Infantry Battalion, 2nd Armored Division.
While in Germany, Miles met Elizabeth Anna “Anneliese” Joerz. The two married in April 1955 in Mainz, Germany, and returned to Lancaster later that year, where he resumed work at Armstrong.
In 1958, after being laid off, Miles briefly worked as a Fuller Brush salesman before joining the Lancaster City Police in May 1959. During his distinguished career, he pursued higher education, attending HACC and earning an associate degree in Police Administration in 1970, followed by a bachelor’s degree in government from Franklin & Marshall College in 1975. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant and retired in February 1986.
The following day, he began a second career as Captain of Security at Lancaster County Prison, serving nearly 12 years before retiring again on his 65th birthday.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Miles had a passion for dance. Beginning in 1979, he trained with and taught ballroom dancing through Arthur Murray Studios, continuing to teach until 2018.
Miles was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church and faithfully led the Seniors Pinochle Club from May 12, 2005, until recent years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann Brockie-Martin of Lancaster; his sons, Derek V. Martin (husband of Katelyn) of New Holland and Henry J. Martin of Texas; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and his half-brother, Harry Martin of Peach Bottom.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughters, Sonia J. Neff and Susan L. Wood, and his brother, William Kenneth Martin.
