Michael Hoffman Mumma

Michael Hoffman Mumma, age 84, died peacefully on October 21, 2026, with family gathered by his side. Born August 20, 1942, in Mount Joy, PA, Michael was the son of Mark H. and Grace I. Mumma. He graduated in 1960 from Donegal High School and received a BA in Psychology from the University of Findlay, Findlay, Ohio, in 1964.

Michael was employed for 30 years as co-founder and President of Cell-Con, Inc., a manufacturing company producing battery assemblies and smart chargers for use in medical equipment and other portable products, with facilities in Exton, PA and Bedford, PA. His prior employment history includes Sperry New Holland and RCA.

He was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church for 60 years, where he served as Elder, Youth Group Leader, Chairman of the Peace, Justice, and Reconciliation Committee, and member of the Highland Chancel Choir. He volunteered for the Power Packs Project, providing weekend meals to disadvantaged children in Lancaster. Always an advocate for social justice, he organized a men’s breakfast group to address the concept of putting faith into action. He and a group of four others were the genesis for the start-up of Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity.

He was founding President of the Board of Directors of Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity, later served a second term as Board President, and was presented with a Friend of Lancaster Habitat Award. Michael served on the Board of Directors of the Samaritan Counseling Center, as Board Treasurer for Shreiner-Concord Cemetery and was also a past member of the board of directors for Theater of the Seventh Sister. He traveled to Nicaragua in 1989 to assess damage from the Contra War and twice again to help rebuild and supply healthcare facilities destroyed during the war. In addition, he supervised the electrical wiring of a school in Tapasle, Nicaragua. The entire community cheered to see lighting in the school room.

He was elected to serve on the International Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity for six years and chaired the Board Service Committee. He traveled and worked with the International Habitat organization in Entebbe, Uganda and Manilla, Philippines. He participated in three Jimmy Carter Work Projects; in Tijuana, Mexico; Lakota Sioux Reservation, South Dakota; and Washington, DC. He helped rebuild a house lost to the 2011 tornado in Tuscaloosa, AL. Michael received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater, the University of Findlay, for his tireless work on behalf of social justice.

Michael graduated from Oasis Ministries for Spiritual Development, Camp Hill, PA, in 2007, earning certification in Spiritual Direction. He served on the Board of Directors of Oasis Ministries, as President of the Board of Directors, and worked in private practice as a spiritual director following his retirement from Cell- Con, Inc.

His work with Oasis Ministries led him to the Living School for Action and Contemplation, in Albuquerque, NM, where he was involved in two years of intense spiritual studies under the tutelage of well-known authors and spiritual guides, Richard Rohr, James Finley, and Cynthia Bourgeault. He completed his studies there in 2016.

Michael adored his children and grandchildren, spending time with them in person or on the phone, at home or in Brewster and Wellfleet on Cape Cod, at backyard cook-outs, and many hikes in Lancaster County Central Park. In later years he was grateful for the opportunity to be a mentor to them.

Michael participated in swimming, hiking, singing, competitive football and tennis; and, upon retirement, discovered the game of golf. He practiced golf every day, and subsequently became a member of PARSORMORE, a retired men’s golf league in Lancaster, which he greatly enjoyed. He and his golf buddies played year-round, even in sub-freezing temperatures. He sang with the Highland Church Chancel Choir, Lancaster Chamber Singers, Lancaster Symphony Chorus, the Allegro Chorus, the Wheatland Festival Chorus, and the Willow Valley Chorale. Michael participated in trekking adventures in the Italian Alps and Cinque Terra, Greece and the Islands, Portugal, and the Azore Islands.

Michael is survived by his wife of 32 years, Marjorie Rupert-Mumma, Lancaster, PA; brother, James Mumma, husband of JoAnn Mumma, Friendship, MD; sister, Jane Mumma Swartz, wife of Donald Swartz, Lancaster, PA; daughter Lynn Michele Mumma, wife of Edward McHugh, Annapolis, MD; son, Steven Mumma; step-son, David McNaughton, Jr., Manheim, PA; step-daughter Laura McNaughton, Lancaster, PA; and grandchildren, Caitlin and Michael Pettengill; Annabella and Lily Mumma; and Hamilton, Eve, and Violet McNaughton.
