Mary M. Toaltoan, 86, of Lancaster, went home to be with her Lord while surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Born in Port Deposit, MD, she was the daughter of the late Ralston and Ethel (Griffin) Shockley. She was also the devoted life partner and wife to Ronald F. Toalton for 70 years.
Mary spent much of her life caring for others, a job she took great pride in. As a child, Mary would make meals for her father, which led her to becoming a highly skilled cook and baker. She also opened her home to many foster children over the years, spoiling both them and her own children with delicious food daily. When she wasn’t cooking, she was in her garden, out finding the newest deal at Boscov’s, or taking photos of the world around her, many of which ended up in frames along the walls of her home. She also took great pride in her appearance, ensuring she was always put together and was adorned with her favorite jewelry pieces. Her family was her whole world, and they, in turn, will dearly miss her.
Mary is survived by her husband Ronald; her children Dennis Shockley, Rhonda (John) Toaltoan, Janice (Hendricks) Jackson, Sherry (James) Griffy, and Renee (Justin) Martinez; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and sisters Gloria Thompson, Dorothy Shockley, Joan Smith, and Janet Washington. She is preceded in passing by her daughter, Katherine John; and siblings Charlie Shockley, Cora Boynes, Monica Johnson, George Shockley, Roston Shockley, James Shockley, Sam Shockley, and Alex Shockley.
Friends and relatives are invited to celebrate and honor Mary’s life at 11AM on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 414 E. King Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. A viewing will be held prior to the service beginning at 9AM. Mary will be laid to rest at Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery.
