Mary Louise Ritchey, 85, of Lancaster, passed away on March 25, 2026, after a 2-week diagnosis with stage 4 gastric cancer. She was at her niece’s home under the care of her great niece and surrounded by family. Born in Roaring Spring, PA, she was the daughter of the late James Canole Ritchey and Genevieve Agnes Higgins.
Mary Lou graduated from Hollidaysburg Area High School in 1958 and worked as a waitress for most of her career at The Chuckwagon in Duncansville, Leola Family Restaurant, and New Holland Family Restaurant. In her free time, Mary Lou enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading, watching Penn State and Steelers football, and spending time with her beloved family. She was also strong in her faith.
Mary Lou is survived by nieces and nephews: Mary Shumaker, Dennis Maher, Gary Long (Rose), Karen Long, Kevin Long (Valerie), Laurie Smith (Don) with whom she resided for many years, Lisa Greaser (Mark), and Kristi Long; her beloved dog Kirby, and a host of great nieces and nephews, as well as 2 great-nephews on the way in June.
Mary Lou was predeceased by her companion Wilfred Cox, siblings: Don Hazenstab, Marie Costello, Thelma Maher, Doris Long, and Patrick Ritchey; niece Georgia Long, and nephews Alan Hazenstab and Michael Costello.
Mary Lou will be laid to rest at Alto-Reste Park privately and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Mary Lou’s name to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601.
