Her name reflects the many chapters of her life. She was daughter, wife, mother and incubator of a rebellious spirit that she passed on to her family. She was born in 1929, the fourth of six children in an Irish Catholic family in the Bronx. She stood out from the beginning, not only because of her great beauty, but also because of her spark and her desire for an adventurous life.
She met our father, John Barry, who lived just a few blocks away, right after high school and it was love at first sight. They moved many times due to his job at the phone company. Every move showed her dedication to creating a loving home for her family. Mom instilled in her children, Mary Ellen Yates, John Barry, Michael Barry, Steven Barry and David Barry, a love of adventure and a desire to follow their hearts. When John passed away in 1971, they were living in Skaneateles NY, and the community embraced Mary.
Mary received the gift of finding love again with William Moody. They resided in Skaneateles and Mary supported his business as the town dentist. With their marriage Mary gained 3 more sons, William Moody Jr., Thomas Moody and Michael Moody. After Bill’s death in 2010 Mary moved to Lancaster with her son David and his wife Courtney. Her final place of residence was at St. Anne’s Retirement Community where she would engage her fellow residents and the staff with tales of New York City. The family appreciates all the support and love that St. Anne’s provided her.
She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren: David Yates, Sean Yates, Meghan Barry, Abby Lawson, Chelsea Barry-Gardner, Everett Barry, Spencer Barry, Erin Brooks, Hilary Mulrenan, Thomas Moody, Matthew Moody and 10 great-grandchildren.
No matter how far apart we may all be geographically, the lessons and love Mom gave us will always tie us together. Thank you, Mom, for the spark. We believe in ourselves because you believed in us.
