Mary M. Doherty, 76, of Quarryville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026, at Lancaster General Hospital.
Mary was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to the late Robert and Leah (Black) Muir. She graduated from Dunmore High School and spent many years working in healthcare administration before retiring.
What defined Mary was never her work, it was loving her family.
Mary was the beloved wife of the late William J. Doherty, with whom she shared 57 years of marriage. Together, they built a life and a family filled with love, memories, and the everyday moments that become so meaningful over time.
She was a devoted mother to Mary Lou Frazier (Rick Gomez) and Brian Doherty (Susan), and a proud and loving grandmother to Matthew Frazier, Amanda Doherty, and Christopher Doherty. Being a mother and grandmother brought Mary some of her greatest happiness. She loved hearing what was happening in their lives, celebrating their accomplishments, being part of their everyday moments, and simply spending time with the people she loved.
Mary had a remarkable way of making people feel welcome and cared for. She was energetic, compassionate, and genuinely enjoyed being around people. She loved to laugh, she loved life, she loved music, and she found joy in the little things.
She found beauty in God’s creation and the world around her. She especially loved flowers, gardening, and the wild birds that visited her yard. She could almost always be found in her “happy place” on the back deck, finding joy in the small things that others might overlook, a flower in bloom, a bird at the feeder, the movement of leaves in the breeze, or the sudden appearance of a hummingbird.
There is something about a hummingbird that feels a lot like Mary. They are small, but full of life. They are energetic and persistent, and yet they bring such beauty and joy when they appear. A hummingbird, though small leaves an impression, its presence may be brief, yet it is unforgettable.
Mary was much the same, she brought life and energy wherever she went. She cared deeply about the people around her. She noticed the little things, gave of herself, and She loved her family with her whole heart.
Now, there is an empty place where Mary once sat, for her family, losing her means losing someone who was woven into the everyday parts of life. It means there will be moments when they instinctively want to call her, tell her something, or share a story with her. It means there will be an empty chair at family gatherings and a quiet place where her laughter used to be.
Those things sting, but alongside the sadness is an enormous sense of gratitude.
Gratitude for 76 years of her life, gratitude for 57 years of marriage. Gratitude for the love she gave so freely and gratitude for the family she built and the memories she leaves behind.
Mary’s legacy is not found in things that can be measured. It is found in the people she loved and in the different ways she shaped their lives. Her children and grandchildren carry that love with them, as do her sisters, her many nieces and nephews, and the friends who were fortunate enough to know her.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Doherty; her parents; her brothers Robert and Clinton, and her sisters Beverly and Evelyn. She is survived by her sisters Lois Johnson (Barry) and Barbara Horvick (Norman).
She will be missed in a thousand little ways, in conversations, in family gatherings, in the “happy place” on the deck, in the quiet moments, and whenever a hummingbird suddenly appears, perhaps her family and friends will stop for a moment, notice its beauty, smile, and think of Mary.
That would be fitting, because Mary spent her life bringing love, energy, beauty, and joy to the people around her. And that is how she would love to be remembered.
Mary will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and she will remain forever cherished by the family and friends who were blessed to call her Mom, Mimi, Sister, or Friend.
Memorial contributions in Mary’s memory may be made to Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research https://donorbox.org/tri-state-bird-rescue-research or the American Cancer Society, causes that reflected her compassion and the things she cared about.
