Martin Gordon, went home to be with The Lord on June 25, 2026 in Lancaster in his 79th year. He was the only son of the late Harry E. and Dorothy K. Gordon (Brooklyn, NY).
Marty was a 1966 graduate of Brooklyn Friends School in which he graduated 8th in his class. He served as editor-in-chief of the 1966 yearbook as well as holding other class offices. He was accepted and attended Syracuse University as a New York State Regents Scholar where he graduated in 1970 with a BS in Political Science. While at Syracuse, he was a member of Beta Sigma Rho fraternity serving that organization on its executive council for six semesters as secretary.
Following a brief stint as a group insurance non-standard policy technician in CT, Mary accepted a posting at the University of Rhode Island Library as a part time clerk in its Serials Division where he filled in for staff members who were not present. While so employed Marty obtained a M.LS. from the University’s School of Library Science, graduating cum laude. After serving as Assistant Librarian at Mt. Saint Joseph’s College where he served as Periodicals Librarian, Mary was offered and accepted a position at Franklin and Marshall College where he served at Periodicals Librarian (1974/91), Serials Librarian (89/91), Acquisitions Librarian ( 1991/2010), and finally as Content Services Librarian ( 2010/2012).
During his 38 plus years of service to the College, Marty was instrumental in the development of periodicals subscription allocation support algorithm (published in the ALA Clip Notes series) as well as administering overall fund allocation , commercial binding, microforms management, and electronic resources management (ERM). In 2006 , Marty was granted the status of Associate Librarian, in recognition of his professional achievements. Marty contributed several articles to the professional literature, coordinated and presented papers at several regional conferences, as well as served in various capacities within the North American Serials Groups (NASIG) including annual conference presenter and committee chairperson. In 2010 he was honored at the annual NASIG conference for perfect conference attendance during that organizations first 25 years.
Marty was elected to and served on the vestry of St. Edward’s Episcopal Church from 1998 to 2002, acting as the vestry’s secretary concurrently during that period. He was at one time, also lay Eucharistic Minister and Visitor at that parish as well. He also enjoyed backyard barbecues, “puttering” around his house, gardening, and traveling. Marty was a SLC volunteer for Hospice and Community Care, as well as a volunteer in administrative services for Brethren Village.
Marty was preceded in death by his Sharon Gordon, his beloved wife of 43 years. He is survived by his fiancée Florence and her loving family Ron, Denise, Diana,Deb and Susie.
Interment will occur at the Manheim Fairview Cemetery, Sun Hill Rd in Manheim, PA. Friends are invited to attend the graveside service on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 10am.
