Lynn Clayton Bergey, 55, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 5, 2026, due to heart-related issues. Born in Chesapeake, VA, to a family rooted in faith and farming, he was the son of the late James H. Bergey, Sr. and Mary Troyer Bergey. He was deeply cherished by his parents and siblings and received many unique skills and experiences from each of them. He was the loving husband of Lori Brechbill Bergey, with whom he shared over 31 years of marriage. He was the love of her life.
After graduating from Eastern Mennonite High School, Lynn took several gap years, working in the family business and living in Baltimore, Belize, and Philadelphia with Eastern Mennonite Mission’s YES program. Next, he attended Hesston College (KS), where he earned an Associate's Degree in Aviation, and then attended Upper Bucks County Technical School (PA), where he earned an A&P (aircraft mechanic) degree. He worked for several companies before joining Penske Corporation, where he served as a pilot for 22 years, holding type ratings in several different jets. Lynn’s favorite part of his job at Penske was the people. He loved building relationships with his crew members and passengers. He took great pride in getting his passengers safely to their destinations and making them feel well cared for as members of Team Penske.
Lynn was a partner in his family business, Flying Home LLC, which operates Bergey’s Breadbasket in Chesapeake, VA. His great desire was that this precious piece of land honor his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents and remain a place where folks eat good food and spend time on the farm for generations to come. Lynn was so proud of this business that he and his siblings, Harold, Floyd, and Joy, reinvented it in the early 2000’s. He dedicated at least one week of his vacation each year to working to improve the property.
Lynn was full of passion and lived an active life. He never stopped learning and trying to improve himself. One of Lynn’s greatest traits was that he made everyone feel welcome, like they were family. He loved helping and getting to know neighbors, friends, and family. He enjoyed running, hiking, skiing (downhill and cross-country), paddleboarding, woodworking, car repair, driving fast German cars, listening to music (jazz, bluegrass, country, and folk), cooking and eating all types of food, construction, home repair projects, and enjoying a good meal with friends. Most recently, he was working to improve his welding skills to restore a 1984 Mercedes named Stickers.
Lynn was an active member of Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, where he recently chaired the Grant Street project, which created an affordable housing unit on church property, and he also served on the church council. Lynn was looking forward to chaperoning a summer youth group service trip to Kentucky with the MCC Appalachia Build program. Lynn also served on the board of Chestnut Housing, which works to provide affordable housing in Lancaster. He loved finding ways to help others with his construction skills.
Lynn deeply loved his wife, Lori, and their children, Noah and Sophie. Lynn and Lori met in1989 in EMM’s YES program and married on June 18, 1994. Lori will always be grateful for Lynn’s insistence that they vacation together regularly. She will always cherish the times she and Lynn spent exploring and relaxing together. Lynn delighted in planning family trips all over the US and Europe. He treasured any time they could spend together, whether it was working on house or yard projects, going for walks with the family dog, Miles, exercising together, skiing, cooking for and hosting family, or weekly phone calls with Noah and Sophie. He loved learning about Noah and Sophie’s daily lives as they launched themselves as young adults and in their new careers. He was so proud of them.
In addition to his wife Lori, he is survived by his children: Noah Bergey of Annapolis, MD, and Sophie Bergey of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are his siblings: J. Harold Bergey Jr., of Chesapeake, VA, Kathy Mast, (Dale) of Richmond, VA, Floyd Bergey, (Debbie) of Chesapeake, VA, Daniel Bergey, (Dorcas) of Moyock, NC, and Joy Morris, (Mike) of Chesapeake, VA. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Bergey, sister-in-law Rose Bergey, and two infant brothers. He also leaves behind his parents-in-law, Ray, and Sue Brechbill (Millersville, PA); his in-laws, David, and Katrina Brechbill (Lititz, PA); Angie and Andre Martin (Millersville, PA); Jodi and Ryan Lapp (Lancaster, PA); and many beloved nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by all of them.
A Celebration of Lynn’s Life will be held on February 28, 2026. Visitation will occur from 9:30-10:30 AM, with the service beginning at 11:00 AM at Worship Center, 2384 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Chestnut Housing, Chestnuthousing.org.
