Lois E. Lacy

Lois Elizabeth Lacy was born on October 27, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky, to William Geurin and Anna V. Goodnight. She was raised within a close-knit family community.

Lois spent her formative years in Kentucky, where she became a member of St. Stephens Baptist Church (Rev. Cosby) at an early age after accepting Jesus Christ at ten. At church, she began her lifelong involvement with music, playing piano for Sunday School and the children's choir, and regularly attending Sunday school and vacation bible school. Lois later pursued formal music education, studying piano and music theory at the University of Louisville School of Music.

In 1955, the family relocated to Philadelphia. Lois became an engaged member of New Bethlehem Baptist Church, serving as pianist for Sunday School, participating in the Junior Usher Board and the Young People's Missionary Group. During this period, she met her future husband, Bill, through their work as library aides at Sayer Junior High School.

Lois and Bill developed a friendship while classmates in history, performing together in orchestra and sharing musical contributions at West Philadelphia High School, where Lois played organ in both auditoriums.

Upon graduating from West Philadelphia High School in June 1960, Lois attended the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. She earned her Bachelor's degree in classical music, with a minor in voice.

On May 29, 1965, Lois married her high school sweetheart, William "Bill" Lacy. They resided in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New Jersey; and Delaware, remaining active members of New Bethlehem Baptist Church in Philadelphia and Second Baptist Church in Moorestown, NJ. Later, they joined Love of Christ Church in Delaware, contributing to Bible Study and Lois children's church activities. They were married nearly 58 years until Bill's passing on January 5, 2023.

Lois served as Director of the Angel Choir at Bethel AME Church in Moorestown, NJ, from 1988 to 1996, and subsequently directed the New Generation Young People's Choir. She also provided musical leadership at Grace Baptist Church in Burlington, NJ as director for both the Senior Choir and the children's choir.

Alongside her extensive church service, Lois dedicated 40 years to the Philadelphia School Board of Education as a music teacher, impacting thousands of students and earning a master's degree during her career.

In 2002, Lois and Bill relocated to Newark, DE. Lois retired in June 2004 yet continued to share her passion for music by offering private piano lessons and serving as a substitute music teacher in Philadelphia schools until 2023.

On Saturday, May 2, 2026, with faith in God's promise, we find comfort in knowing that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ welcomed Lois home, adding another angel to His heavenly flock. Lois was cherished by family, friends, church community, neighbors, and former students whose lives were touched by her dedication, kindness, and musicianship.

She is survived by her adult children, VeRita (Mark), William Jr. (Lys), Sean Phillip; seven granddaughters (Camille, Gabrielle, Genesis, Olivia, Isabella, Lauren, and Kendall); her sister Janet Geurin Muller; extended family, friends, church family, neighbors, and generations of students.
