Lloyd G. Bortzfield, Jr, age 90, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026. Born January 30, 1936, in Pequea, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Freida Bortzfield, Sr.
A lifelong lover of baseball, he played first base at Elizabethtown College where his team won the Small College World Series three out of his four years there and later became a member of the Lancaster County Baseball Chapter Hall of Fame. His love for the game carried into coaching, where he coached at Conestoga Valley High School and later coached his son for Willow Street baseball. As a young pitcher, he also won the New Era Tournament representing Marticville. Beyond the baseball field, he devoted 30 years to education as a teacher at Conestoga Valley, where he influenced countless students and athletes.
He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was a devout member of First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg where he was very active with the food bank. In his spare time, he remained a devoted fan of the Baltimore Orioles and rarely missed a chance to follow the team. He will be remembered for his dedication to family, his dedication to his country, his love of baseball, his service to his community, and the lasting impact he made on generations of students and players.
He shared 67 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gwendolyn (Erb) Bortzfield of Paradise, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his brother, Harry (Shirl) of Millersville, a son Shawn (Joan) of Lancaster, a daughter Trish (Nick) of Mountville and a Granddaughter, Devon (Spenser) of Columbia. He was proceeded in death by his brother, Robert Bortzfield.
A service will take place on Saturday April 11, 2026, at 1st Presbyterian Church, 101 S Decatur St, Strasburg, PA 17579, at a time to be announced.
