Joy M. Elias

Joy Elias, 80, of Lancaster, PA, formerly of Whippany and Randolph, NJ, passed away on October 9, 2026. By every measure, she lived a life that added up.

Born May 27, 1946, to Bert and Marcella Feuling, Joy was one of six kids, which was excellent training for a future classroom full of students. She began her own schooling with nuns, which gave her a lifetime of entertaining stories. She went on to graduate from Hanover Park High School and earned her Master of Education from Kean University. Before settling into teaching, she spent time at the Automatic Switch Company.

Joy met her husband, Frank, and quickly fell in love. They were married in 1970 and built a beautiful life together full of family, travel, and laughter. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2020.

Among the greatest joys of Joy's life was becoming a mother to her son, Kevin. It was a role she waited patiently to fill, and she often recounted how deeply she wished for him and how proud she was of him. From the moment he arrived, she knew her waiting had been worth it. It was impossible to listen to her retell this story without shedding a tear.

Joy taught math in the Randolph School District for more than 30 years. She taught generations of students that math was nothing to fear. Her talent for making numbers make sense was matched only by her ability to connect with the students themselves, many of whom she remembered fondly and shared stories of over the years.

Joy never confined her teaching to four walls. She took students whale watching in Cape Cod, proving that the best lessons sometimes come with a splash. She also loved to travel and saw much of the world. She honeymooned in Bermuda, attended family reunions in Europe, took part in a Women's Conference in China, and enjoyed frequent trips to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with Frank.

At home, Joy had a passion that was fluffy and loyal: dogs. She raised Chows and showed them from a young age, where she was surely the most confident handler in the ring. Dogs remained cherished members of her household for the rest of her life.

In retirement, Joy traded Jersey winters for the sunny shores of Myrtle Beach, having more than earned a beach chair. She later moved to Lancaster, PA, to be closer to family. Her family is grateful for the many wonderful memories made both there and in Myrtle Beach with her over the years.

Joy is survived by her son, Kevin Elias, and his wife, Lindsey; her grandchildren, Jaylin and Lily; and her siblings Lynn Feuling (Claudette), Lee Feuling (Holly), Larry Feuling, Jan Abbamont (John), and Jill Carmen. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends, and former students whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Marcella, and by her beloved husband, Frank, who we imagine was eagerly waiting to welcome her home with open arms.

Joy will be remembered for her sharp wit, her famous eye roll, her big heart, and her love of dogs, kids, shopping, and adventure. She had a gift for making everyone around her feel special, and this is something we will carry with us always.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral or memorial service. Instead, the family invites you to honor her memory with a donation to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center to support animal rescue and rehabilitation, a cause close to her heart. We also welcome you to share your favorite memories and stories of Joy below.
