Herbert George May, Jr., formerly of Plymouth Meeting and Fort Washington, PA, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2026, at age 94 in his current residence at Brethren Village Retirement Community in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Beloved husband of 64 years to the late Alice Jean (nee Robertson); loving father of Leslie Tahsler (Bruce), Joyce Shiffler (Michael), Herbert G. May, III (Teddi), and Beatrice Lemanowicz (Richard); loving brother of Mary Lou Brosso; also survived by 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and predeceased by a grandson.
Born in 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Herbert George and Mary (Aaronson) May, Herb graduated from Germantown High School in Philadelphia County. Following graduation, Herb was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds Baseball system as a pitcher playing on the 1950 Muncie, Indiana, Cincinnati Reds Class D farm team for a couple of years, with his statistics noted in the "Sporting News Baseball Guide" in the files of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Herb's tour in baseball was a proud memory shared with all who knew him, most notably his story of meeting Jackie Robinson and other baseball legends.
Following baseball, Herb attended Temple University and proudly served his country in the United States Navy Reserves until 1954, the same year when Alice would become Herb's beautiful bride of 64 years until her passing in 2018. Herb was an avid Philadelphia sports fan, a frequent visitor to Ocean City, New Jersey where his parents ran a hotel, and a successful food broker for various food service and grocery establishments until his retirement at the age of 70. Most of all, Herb helped Alice with her antique shop, finding joy in the simple pleasures of conversation, old western films, and family visits to share in the successes of his cherished children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Herb's smile and generous nature will forever be his lasting impression.
Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family at the Brethren Village Chapel, 3009 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543, beginning at 10AM on Friday, February 20, 2026, followed by Herb's Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM with Pastor Rev. Dan Powell as the celebrant. Interment will be private at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, Ambler, PA. Memorial donations may be made in Herb's memory to the Special Olympics, 55 Miller St, Enola, PA 17025.
