Harold "Gene" Eugene Meek

Harold "Gene" Eugene Meek, 98, of Strasburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2026, at Penn State Lancaster Medical Center.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Gene was the son of the late Clarence and Helen Brown Meek. He was the devoted husband of Barbara Shelpeck Meek for 65 wonderful years.

A proud World War II veteran, Gene served honorably in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Following his military service, he enjoyed a successful career in information technology management with General Electric and Hoffman-La Roche.

Gene was truly a builder of dreams. Throughout their marriage, he lovingly brought Barbara's home improvement ideas to life, always tackling the next project with enthusiasm. He often joked that a bruised black fingernail was simply evidence of his latest accomplishment.

Gene and Barbara were inseparable, sharing treasured time with family in Pennsylvania, the Jersey Shore, and Florida.

He believed the secret to a long life was maintaining a positive attitude. His favorite expression, "I am so blessed," reflected the gratitude and optimism with which he lived each day. Gene loved the Lord and sought to live in his will daily. The verse I John 4:8, Whoever does not love, does not know God because God is love, shaped who he was as a husband, father and friend.

Surviving are three children: Leslie Laughlin and her husband, David; Susan Gross and her husband, Strother; and David Meek and his wife, Pam. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara; his grandson, James Gross; his great-grandchild, Peyton Mayoyo; and his siblings, Robert, Edwin, Mary, Quentin, and Coulter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan’s Purse.

Family and friends are invited to gather from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with a celebration of Gene’s life beginning at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at Charles F.
