Eugene Nicholas Smolko

Eugene Nicholas "Gene" Smolko, 83, of Lancaster, passed away on June 25, 2026. Gene was the son of the late Michael Steele Smolko and Helen Smolko. He shared more than 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Maria Smolko, who preceded him in death in 2017. 

Gene dedicated his career to the steel manufacturing industry, working as a welder for many years before retiring from High Steel. 

A devoted sports fan, Gene especially enjoyed cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, following Penn State wrestling, and football. He was a lifelong member of the Elks and treasured the time he spent with his family above all else. 

Gene is survived by his daughter, Victoria Weaver and his son, Eugene Nicholas Smolko Jr. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, his brothers, Jerry Smolko and Michael Smolko, as well as extended family members, and friends. 

In addition to his wife, Maria, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Smolko.
