Dr. Edward David Maley, 84, of Lancaster Pennsylvania died on May 19, 2026, peacefully following a short illness, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Barbara Binzen Maley, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage this past March.
Edward Maley was the son of the late James D. Maley and Dorothy Martin Maley, and was raised on Cabbage Hill in Lancaster. His family belonged to St. Mary Parish, where Ed attended St. Mary’s Catholic School. Ed went on to attend Lancaster Catholic High School and participate in many extracurricular activities, including basketball, football, and serving as Student Council President his senior year. Also at Catholic High, at the age of just 14, Ed met his eventual wife and lifelong partner, Barbara. In all, Ed and Barbara shared more than 70 years together.
After graduating from Catholic High, Ed attended undergraduate studies at Brown University in Rhode Island and then medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, earning his medical doctorate degree. He served in the US Navy at Portsmouth Naval Hospital in the Medical Corp from 1971-1973. After practicing orthopedics for one year in Oregon, Ed moved with Barbara and their children back to Lancaster in 1974 to join Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster and raise their children in Lancaster, their hometown.
In addition to practicing orthopedic surgery with skill and joy for 38 years, Ed spent the last 50 years contributing much to his hometown. He served on Lancaster Catholic’s School Board of Directors and on the capital campaign for Lancaster Catholic’s Crusader Stadium. Ed was selected to the Lancaster Catholic Athletic Hall of Honor, and received the Alumni Citation Award—the highest award bestowed upon any Catholic High alumnus. Beyond Catholic High, Ed has served as owner for several decades of the Lititz Planing Mill which crafts the type of custom woodwork that he has always appreciated.
Ed is lovingly remembered by his family as exceptionally gifted, generous, hardworking, and blessed with a terrific sense of humor. In everything he did, he pursued and modeled excellence. Ed spearheaded memorable and active family vacations fishing along the Outer Banks—and deep sea fishing in Oregon Inlet, at least when his ambitious wave surfing did not get in the way. He taught his whole family to ski . . . by putting them all on skis at the peak of the Colorado Rockies. Ed was fascinated, frustrated, and enthralled by his secondary love, the game of golf, as many Lancaster Country Club buddies can attest. He could build, fix, and improve virtually anything with his skills in plumbing, carpentry, and electric, and possessed a keen artistic sensibility that he shared with Barbara, a gifted artist herself. From his special perch on his home deck, Ed delighted in every sunset. Up to his final years, Ed did most of the landscaping of his beautiful home gardens himself. In his later years, Ed cherished and celebrated his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and there was nothing he would not sacrifice to make their lives better.
Although he achieved much professional success, Ed never forgot his Cabbage Hill roots. Throughout his life, Ed remained humble, hardworking, and dedicated to his faith and to his family above all.
Ed was dearly loved by many. In addition to his beloved wife, Barbara Maley, he is survived by children Brenda Parker (Steven), Christopher Maley (Maureen), and Jonathan Maley (Kitty); and his grandchildren Sarah Parker Eaton (Chris), Allison Parker, Emily Parker Olson (Parker); Christopher Maley Jr. (Susan Liu) and Sean Maley (Danielle); Stella Maley and Celia Maley; and great grandchildren Jackson Eaton, Elizabeth Eaton and James Olson. Ed is also survived by his sister, Lorraine Phillips (Win) and sisters-in-law Fay Binzen (Bill) and Jane Mourer; he was preceded in death by his brother Jim (Elaine). Ed is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and many other dear family, friends and former patients.
Services will be held May 26 and 27 to celebrate Ed Maley’s life. Friends may visit with the family at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home (3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz PA 17543) on Tuesday May 26 from 6-8pm, and at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church (557 West Walnut Street, Lancaster PA 17603) on Wednesday May 27 from 10-11am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church at 11am on May 27, followed by interment in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.
Ed credited much of his success throughout his life to his strong foundation in education and faith at Lancaster Catholic High School. (We are pretty sure he appreciated meeting the love of his life there, as well.) In lieu of flowers the family would be most honored by gifts to Lancaster Catholic High School (650 Juliette Avenue, Lancaster PA 17601) in Dr. Edward Maley’s memory.
