Donald L. "Monk" Dietrich

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald L. "Monk" Dietrich, a cherished father and grandfather, devoted friend, and veteran, who left us peacefully surrounded by his family, on August 8, 2026, at the age of 89, following an injury and extended illness. Born on April 14, 1937, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Monk dedicated his life to caring for those around him and creating lasting memories with his family. 

Monk, a proud member of the United States Navy, served from September 15, 1955, until his honorable discharge on September 9, 1959, achieving the rank of RD2. He exemplified the values of service, loyalty, and generosity that shaped not only his life but the lives of those who were fortunate to know him. Monk was a proud member of the American Legion Post #34, the 8th Ward Beneficial Association, and the Navy Club Ship #166 of Lancaster.

At business school, Donald met the love of his life, Arlene, and their courtship blossomed into a remarkable marriage that lasted 28 years until her passing. Together, they purchased a parcel of land and built a home, a testament to their love and commitment. Their lives were filled with joy as they created precious memories during family vacations, family get-togethers, and card nights with friends. 

In his later years, Monk found joy in a variety of pastimes, including fantasy sports, bowling, golf, and playing cards, especially poker. He held a special place in his heart for family gatherings, where his laughter and witty conversations brought warmth to all those around him. Monk was particularly devoted to his role as "Gramps," creating countless cherished memories with his grandson, whom he affectionately referred to as "his little rascal." From advent calendar traditions to husking corn, their bond was a testament to a grandfather's love.

He often fondly reminisced about his youthful days as a soda jerk with his mother and sister and recalled the lessons learned while caddying at Longs Park. Growing up he found immense joy in singing in the church choir and attending church camp, later serving as a junior counselor, helping to inspire the next generation. He shared a deep bond with his sister Shirley and their mother, a trio marked by unwavering love and support throughout their lives, all three who, in a touching parallel, passed at the age of 89.

He is survived by his beloved daughter, Kimberly L. Brackbill, wife of Duane E. of Landisville, his little rascal Zane A., and extended family who carry forward his legacy of love and kindness. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Willis P. and Lillian M. Dietrich, his beloved wife, Arlene A. (Young) Dietrich, and siblings, Elizabeth Bunteman, Jane Slote, Willis “Bill” Dietrich, Jr., and Shirley Allison. A funeral service to celebrate Monk's life will take place on August 17, 2026, at Charles F. Snyder Jr Funeral Home & Crematory - Lititz Pike. The service will begin at 11:00 am, preceded by a public viewing at 10:00 am. Following the service, a graveside ceremony will be held at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, where we will lay him to rest surrounded by love.
