Constance Caroline Scanlon

Mrs. Constance Caroline Scanlon (née Margeson), OP, 72, of Bowmansville, PA, passed away peacefully at home on 29 AUG 2026 in the loving presence of her husband, Thomas, her niece Carolyn O’Brien, and dear friend Nancy Weber.

Constance was born on 10 OCT 1953 in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Walter Herbert and Mary Cecelia (née Reid) Margeson. She is survived by her husband of almost 50 years Thomas, sons Seth Thomas (Eva) and Justin W. (Christina), siblings Carol O’Brien (Francis), Robert (Krys), and Paul (Mary Beth), grandchildren Owen, Ian, Aiden, Augustine, Ambrose, and Monica, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Originally from Fishtown, Philadelphia, where she was a member of Holy Name of Jesus parish, Constance attended St Boniface Business School before pursuing a career in nursing. She worked as a school nurse at Spruance Gilbert School before transitioning to a position at a private obstetrics and gynecology practice. In 2000, Constance and Thomas moved from Northeast Philadelphia to Lancaster County, PA to start a new life in a more relaxed and rural setting.

Constance enjoyed working with her hands, learning and developing various crafts including felting, woodworking, ceramic painting, calligraphy, and doll making. She was immensely proud of her Scottish heritage (Clan Donnachaidh) and loved to elaborately decorate the house for major holidays, with special efforts dedicated to Hallowe’en, Christmas, and—mindful of her familial link to the Pilgrims—Thanksgiving. Over the years, her Yorkies Sarah, Hannah, Higgins, and Jingle Bella gave her much joy. Constance was also an avid collector of antiques, especially furniture and dolls, and an ardent fan of her beloved Philadelphia Phillies.

Constance’s Catholic faith was central to her life. She is survived by her godchildren (Francis, Heather, Robert, Cecelia, and Manuel). She glorified God with her beautiful voice as a member of several parish choirs as well as the Collegiate Choir of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul, which sang for Pope John Paul II when he visited Philadelphia in 1979. During her retirement, Constance was a regular cantor for funeral Masses, and she and Thomas served as extraordinary Eucharistic ministers for several years, bringing comfort and the Blessed Sacrament to the sick at Lancaster General Hospital. In 2010, Constance made her final profession to become a member of the Lay Fraternity of Saint Dominic, where she took the religious name Guadalupe Nepomucene to reflect her intense devotion to St. John Neumann and the Virgin of Guadalupe. Constance welcomed family members, friends, and strangers alike into both her home and her heart. Her warmth, sense of humor, willingness to sing at the drop of a hat, and deep abiding love for her family and friends will all be sorely missed.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing Friday, September 4, 2026, at 1 PM, at St. Richard’s Catholic Church, Manheim, PA, followed by her Mass of Christian Burial at 2 PM. Internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham Township, PA. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Richards’s Catholic Church and would be appreciated.
