Clarence Glenn Kiehl, known as "Papa" to his children, "Poppy" to his grandchildren, and "Carlos" to his many friends, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, surrounded by the love of his family.
Carlos lived a life shaped by faith, creativity and deep devotion to those he loved. For 52 years, he shared a steadfast and loving marriage with his beloved wife, Joy, whose partnership and companionship were among his life's greatest blessings.
A former missionary to Mexico, Carlos embraced the richness of Hispanic food, music and culture, and his heart remained closely tied to the people and places that shaped so much of his early ministry and friendships. His career also included time as a graphic artist for RR Donnelly & Sons, a security guard for Brinks Armored and a ticket agent for the Strasburg Railroad.
Carlos was an avid birdwatcher and outdoor enthusiast who found joy and satisfaction in the quiet observation of God's creation. He was also a dedicated student of history, particularly the civil war era, and was always eager to discuss a battle, a biography, or a little-known historical detail. An ardent Philadelphia sports fan, he commiserated with his sons in the highs and frequent lows of the Eagles, Sixers and Phillies. As an artist, he expressed his thoughtful spirit and eye for beauty through his creative work, leaving his family with tangible reminders of how he saw the world.
Above all else, he was intensely proud of his family. As Papa, Carlos delighted in his eight children, celebrating their accomplishments, enjoying their unique personalities and loving them generously. As Poppy, he treasured each of his 22 grandchildren, offering them warmth, wisdom and humor that never failed to leave them with a smile and the knowledge that they were each uniquely loved.
Carlos will be remembered for his sincere faith, his servant's heart, his lively storytelling, his quirky (and often irreverent) sense of humor and the ease in which he could make friends wherever he went. His life reflected a quiet strength and a mischievous personality.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Joy; his eight children; Joshua (Rachel), Jeremy (Justine), Jonathan (Kate), Sarah (Teofil Rus), Abigail (Stu Oberg), Joseph (Leslie), Josiah (Anna) and Beltran; his 22 grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly. His family draws comfort in the promise of eternal life and rejoices in the legacy of faith and love Carlos leaves behind.
A service of Remembrance and Resurrection Hope will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am on March 14, 2026 with time for visitation with the family beginning at 10:00 am.
