Christopher J. Payonk

Christopher J. Payonk, 65, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and deeply rooted devotion to the people and simple pleasures he cherished most.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Paul and Eleanor Payonk. He graduated from Hempfield High School and continued his education at Steven’s Trade with a major in baking. Chris spent his 65 years enriching the lives of everyone around him. He was a man of steadfast character whose happiest moments were spent surrounded by family, sharing a fresh-baked batch of treats, or passionately cheering on his beloved Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Flyers. Whether the Orange and Black were in a championship run or enduring a rebuilding season, his loyalty never wavered- a true reflection of how he loved the people in his life.

Nothing brought Chris greater joy than his family. He shared a beautiful, enduring life with his loving wife, Karen, who was his anchor and lifelong partner. Together, they raised two wonderful children, Philip and Anna. He welcomed Philip’s wife, Brittany, into the fold with open arms and immense pride. Chris always looked forward to the annual family trip to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon.

His favorite role in recent years was undoubtedly that of “Papa". He adored his three grandchildren- Colton (9), Vada (6), and Jaxon (1)- and took endless delight in watching them grow, playing with them, and ensuring they always had a smile on their faces (and likely a homemade cookie in hand).

In the kitchen, Chris was a master of his craft. Baking was one of his primary love languages; he poured care into every recipe, and nothing gave him more satisfaction than gathering family and friends around the table to enjoy the fruits of his labor. He was involved with the youth in Lancaster City- whether that was coaching street hockey, baseball, soccer, or being a band parent for the McCaskey Band. He was a great leader for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Chris is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his son, Philip, and daughter-in-law, Brittany; his daughter, Anna; and his cherished grandchildren, Colton, Vada, and Jaxon. He is also survived by his mother Eleanor Payonk, siblings David Payonk (Cindy), Mark Payonk, Diane Wilkison (William), Janice Gabriel (Robert), and many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his extended family, dear friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing his generous heart and welcoming spirit.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Charles F. Snyder Funeral home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz PA 17543 at 10:00 AM, with a celebration of life beginning at 12:00 PM. We encourage all who attend to wear their Orange and Black or Philadelphia sports attire.
