Barry Lee Degler, born September 30, 1944, has passed away at age 81.
Barry's greatest love was his wife of 44 years, Valinda "Lynn" Degler (née Miller), who preceded him in death in 2010. They met as math majors at Eastern Nazarene College, where both earned degrees and where he would become a lifelong supporter of the institution. Mathematics remained a shared passion throughout their lives. His devotion to ENC continued beyond graduation, as he followed campus news, attended athletic events when possible, and maintained lasting friendships from his college years.
Barry spent 20 years in the grocery industry before joining West Chester University for 20 years, as the International Programs Director. A keen cook, he introduced and organized an annual potluck that became a popular success with hundreds of international students bringing dishes from their home countries to share while socializing with one another.
Following his retirement, Barry embraced the pursuits that brought him fulfilment. Bridge became a central part of his life. He and Lynn were both Silver Life Masters who competed together in countless tournaments. They drove two hours multiple times each week to attend a bridge club in Delaware, where they had built a strong partnership and deep friendships with fellow players. After Lynn passed, Barry began teaching bridge to others, sharing the skills he had developed.
Golf was another passion he pursued actively throughout his life. For decades, he attended an annual tournament at Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, often bringing his children who were left to roam freely while he played – a tradition remembered fondly by his family. More recently, he spent time on the fairways at Spring Hollow and Willow Valley, where he relished the outdoors and camaraderie.
Travel filled his later years. He explored many destinations with family and friends, with Jerusalem among his most meaningful destinations. But London remained his favorite place, which he visited countless times, always creating treasured memories with those he loved.
Faith anchored Barry's life. He was deeply devoted to Norristown Fairview Village Church (Nazarene), attending faithfully and serving through volunteer work. In 2020, he moved to the Willow Valley community in Lancaster, where he continued living with purpose and engagement.
Barry is survived by his daughters Becky Degler and her wife Carla; Jessica Wolf (née Degler) and her husband Adam, along with their daughter Natalie. His brother Larry Degler and wife Diana survive him, along with sister-in-law Florence Alvino. He was also predeceased by his daughter Abby.
As family and friends come to remember Barry, we invite you to share any stories or anecdotes about him – moments you shared, conversations you had, or simply what he meant to you. These memories can be exchanged privately among those who knew him, helping us honor his life together. His legacy lives on through the relationships he nurtured and the joy he found in life's simple pleasures.
