Barbara A. Miller, 86, of Lititz, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 13, 2026, at Moravian Manor in Lititz. She was the cherished wife of Larry H. Miller, to whom she would have been married for 64 years on June 30, 2026. They shared a strong commitment to each other, their relationship, and their family. They enjoyed a special bond, traveled extensively, and laughed often.
Born in Annville, Pennsylvania, Barbara was the daughter of the late Arthur L. and Hattie Mitchell Rice.
She graduated from Annville-Cleona High School in 1958 and attended nursing school at the Philadelphia Women’s Medical College from 1958 through 1960. Barbara earned her master’s degree in nursing from Villanova University in 1985. Her nursing career spanned 53 years, and she made many life-long friends during that time. She cared for patients at the Good Samaritan Hospital and the VA Hospital in Lebanon from 1960 through 1973. She was a nurse and nursing instructor for Lancaster General Hospital and the LGH School of Nursing from 1973 through 2003 and continued to work for LGH doing community health and volunteer work for many years after retirement. She also taught nursing as an adjunct professor at Immaculata University and Albright College and served on the Board of Directors of Drexel University’s School of Nursing.
She was a long-time member of Highland Presbyterian Church.
Barbara loved nursing and prioritized education and healthcare. She was a life-long learner, and she lived a healthy, active lifestyle. She was surrounded by a large, loving family and many friends. She valued her relationships and was part of two groups of very close friends, self-titled the Common Charlies and the Beverly Drive Culture Club. She was the family matriarch, and her family was her greatest pleasure. She loved to travel, and she brought the family together for many trips to Hilton Head Island, as well as on trips to many states and other countries. She spent innumerable hours nurturing her grandchildren, nieces, great nieces, and great-great nieces and nephews, and she was an active participant in their upbringing. She supported them in every way, including by reading countless books to them, singing songs and frequenting puppet shows, cooking special meals, attending sports matches and school presentations, and shuttling them to their many activities.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Daneen Miller-Smith (Douglas) of Lancaster, and Brad Miller of York; four grandchildren Logan Miller (Kylie), Alexa Miller-Smith (Isabel), Shea Miller-Smith (Sydney), and Quinn Miller-Smith; and by her sister, Jane Louise Rice of Palmyra. She also enjoyed extremely close relationships with her nieces, Cerice Kuntz, of Palmyra, and Michelle Machamer (David), of Hummelstown, and great-nieces Courtney Wert (Aaron), Megan Flynn (Teddy), Lauren Smeal (Zach), Elle Machamer (Tyler), and Gwen Machamer. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Colin Miller, who she very much missed for the remainder of her life. She is also survived by many other close family members and friends.
Friends will be received by her family on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 10-10:40AM at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Rd., Lancaster, PA; at 10:40AM there will be a brief service acknowledging the faithful nursing service Barbara provided during her over 50 year nursing career by the Lancaster County Nurses Honor Guard. There will then be a Memorial Service to follow at 11AM. Friends and family may make contributions in her memory to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
