Alex was born on July 14, 1947, in Kampen, The Netherlands. He shared many years of marriage with his beloved wife, Mary Ellen (Wenger), originally of Terre Hill, PA, who preceded him in death in 2022.
A graduate of the HTS in Zwolle, he earned a degree in Architectural Engineering in 1967. On his 20th birthday, he emigrated to the United States and began his career as a draftsman with Alexander Ewing & Associates in Philadelphia.
He continued his education at McGill University in Montreal, earning a Master's degree in Architecture in 1970. Following his naturalization as a United States citizen in 1976, he became a registered architect in Pennsylvania and advanced to associate with Ewing Cole Erdman & Eubank.
Over the course of a distinguished career, Alex became widely recognized for the planning and design of laboratory facilities for pharma and biotech companies, as well as the American Red Cross. Respected for his expertise, he lectured internationally on laboratory design from 1990 until his retirement from Ewing Cole in 2010.
In 2017, he moved to Lancaster County, where he devoted his retirement years to world travel and to building and enjoying his collection of post-World War II European art.
