Winifred “Winnie” R. Rumble, 82

Winifred “Winnie” R. Rumble, 82, died Friday, February 17, 2012, at the Glen at Willow Valley, Willow Street, PA. Born and raised in Swarthmore, she was the daughter of the late Walter S. and Emily Wagner Rumble. Winnie graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1947 and the Philadelphia College of Art in 1951.

Winnie has painted and been a part of the art world since childhood. She painted many children and adults in her home in one sitting, at Wanamakers in Wilmington, and other stores and events. Using puppets to entertain the children, she was widely known for her fast study pastel likenesses which can be found in literally thousands of homes. Winnie also worked at Springer’s Homemade Ice Cream in Stone Harbor, NJ for 15 years, drawing customers while they waited for their cones. For 25 years she painted many subjects at the Devon Horse Show.

An ardent traveler both in the U.S. and abroad, Winnie painted many landscapes that spanned Greece, Yugoslavia and the Amish Country, and often times included her love for wildlife. Her commissions included large oil paintings, such as her portrait of Judge Joseph de Furia that is displayed at the Bar Association building in Media.

Winnie was also an award winning member of the Delaware State Pistol Club and the Delaware County Camera Club. A champion skier, she enjoyed competing with the Buck Ridge Ski Club, as well as skiing throughout Europe.

Surviving are her sister Elisabeth “Betty”, wife of Jerry Jackson of Rydal, PA, three nieces: Helen Jackson of Brooklyn, NY, Carol Rupert of Birdsboro, PA, and Judy Alexander of Jenkintown, PA, and 11 grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Memorial Service will be held 10 AM Saturday, March 24, 2012, at the Grace Presbyterian Church, Old York and Vista Roads, Jenkintown, PA 19046. To send the family online condolences, please visit SnyderFuneralHome.com. Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 717-560-5100

My protrait, 1963, done at Wanamaker’s, is hanging on my bedroom wall. I looked at it tonight and wondered what became of Winnie. I was 8 years old and am now 65. My mother tells the story that she had to take the portrait back because something did not seem quite right. Turned out my bottom lip was sucked in as I had 7 teeth pulled in the front of my mouth. Winnie fixed it to satisfaction. Wasn’t her fault. : )

Upon cleaning out the family home after my parents passed, I found a pastel of me done by Winnie in 1965…I could not have been more than 1 yr old. I also will put her obituary on the back of it as a record of her talent….My condolences to her family.

I collect art and other things. Found a portrait by her at a flea market. Kept coming back to it, a pastel of a white haired lady with a teal pillbox hat, teal coat and a white fur collar. The skin tones were perfect and the lady looked like personality plus. So it went home with me. “Winnie” must have been just as charming. It was painted in 1966. Libby Bryant

Winnie painted a portrait of me and my cousins at age 4 in 1986 outside of Springers in Stone Harbor. The painting hangs in my home today and i treasure it so much. Thank you, Winnie for the talent you shared with our little corner of the world and beyond.
Sincerely,

Winnie painted our children on the outside porch at Springer’s Ice Cream in Stone Harbor, NJ- summers of 1983 & 1988. She finished the pastels in one sitting, she had an amazing way with 3 & 4 year olds. We cherish these portraits; they have been on our living room wall ever since. She was a talented, sweet & patient lady. RIP- I just taped her obituary on the back of the paintings, so her story goes onward.

I met Winnie at the Buck Ridge Ski Club. I still have the portrait she did of me at Strawbriges. Kind, sweeet- always thoughtful with a laugh about lifes problems. IN 1967 I departed for a new job in California and we lost touch until March 29th  015I thought i would call Winnie as I am coming East to visit family- what a shock to google and learn the sad news. To Winnie sister Betty my thoughts are with you. Sincerely, Donna Mathues

This morning I once again woke looking at the portrait done of me age two. My mother had Winnie come for four evening in a row. She told my mom I was so busy ( I am sure she was being kind ) that she needed more time than usual to draw me. I will cherish that portrait forever.

Thank you,
Winnie

My sister died in November of 2012.  She had a lovely pastel done when she was 5 years old (at Wanamaker’s) as did all of us kids and my two nieces 27 years later-6 pastels that we all love.

Winnie did pastels of my daughters’ in the sixties at Wanamaker’s in Wilmington. I gave them to my daughters a few years ago and they hang in their homes. My own mother took us and it was her idea. I don’t know what possessed me to look her up today only to discover she had only recently passed away and on what would have been my mother’s 101st birthday. She was a lovely lady and I remember the sittings with fondness and melancholy. I am sorry for your loss.

Winnie was a Resident at Meadow Ridge. We had a special connection because we were both artists. Winnie has a very special place in my heart becasue we both loved animals and art.

Winnie was very active and went on almost every outing, and came to almost every activity. We enjoyed her sense of humor, her generous heart, and amazing artistic talent and her wonderful smile. She was a sensitive and kind soul.

I will never forget Winnie. She was a joy to know and will always have a very special place in my heart. She was also a good Christian woman.

My deepest condolences to her family.

Winnie did a portrait of me when I was three years old in 1960.  It is hanging on my mom’s wall.  Mom (84 years old) is currently under hospice care and keeps asking about this portrait.  I did an internet search and found you this way and am so sorry for your loss.  I just wanted to thank you for the many happy memories her art has brought to my mom all these years.
Sincerely,
Connie Berens
