Bill was a kind and gentle man. Bill gave me a great career opportunity in choosing me as the first female to hold a Staff Engineer’s position at Amtrak. I kept in touch with Bill over the years and literally had his retirement pictures to mail to him on my desk before we got the work from home order. I will mail them to you Millie. I’m so sorry for your loss. Bill was a great guy.

Rest in Peace, Mr Hatfield – a one-of-a-kind gentleman and mentor who taught me so much about the craft I knew little about when I returned to Philly in 1991 – you always found the time to “school ” me, whether at a derailment, taking me to substations or to ET projects around the division. I truly am touched by your passing Bill, for you were an integral part and highlight of my railroad career. Few words can describe the utmost respect and thanks for the part you played in my life too and, having had the pleasure of being your “associate”, I know I am not alone in those feelings. You were again, one-of-a-kind, Mr Hatfield – RIP – and may your family find comfort and peace – “Mr Toadvine”…

Dear Millie,
With a sad heart I read of Bill’s passing this morning! Many times I have thought of you both but never got around to visiting.
I was at work at the Manheim Auction and I saw a time card for William Hatfield? I found the lane he was working in but he wasn’t there? I talked with a couple of guys who knew him but it must have been about the time he left.
I kept checking the time card and it disappeared? May the God of all Glory Comfort you and your Family in the grievous loss.
Mike Stewart
