Billy Bertz is the type of man that you want as your friend. The first time I met Billy, was around 1971 at Cassidy’s bar on Lemon Street right down the street from where he worked at SS Bertz Heavy Rigging. Cassidy’s was a common place to eat lunch at the time. In 1985 Billy and I signed up for a pistol class that was taught by Hopstetter and Hoover at the indoor range at Lafayette school in Lancaster. From that time on we became good friends that enjoyed each other’s company and interests. We talked about Catholic School and the Nuns and how he would hide inside the lockers at Catholic High so he wouldn’t get caught doing whatever mischievous thing he was doing. Billy and I shot competitively for the Red Rose Pistol Team, Walt Wise Pistol Matches, International Handgun Metallic Silhouette Association, Palmyra 2700 outdoor matches and the NRA Sectional Matches. Every Friday Night for a few years anywhere about 6 to 15 people would show up to shoot 22’s inside the barn at my parents’ farm and then we would go the Barn Door in Millersville for something to eat. On Sundays, mostly during the winter, we would shoot outdoors at plastic bottles that we would save all week and fill up with water just to see them explode if you were good enough to hit them. Billy showed up numerous times with mercurochrome all over his hands and you knew he was carving something. He carved figurines for about six of us and gave us them for a present and I still have mine along with the two pairs of ducks and a goose he carved for me sitting on top of my safe. I could go on and on about Billy Bertz and tell stories about him that are still fresh in my mind but if you knew Billy you have stories of your own. As hard as it is to say goodbye to our great friend, we must always remember that he is only leading the way for someday us to follow and that we will see him again in heaven. Rest in Peace Billy.

Peace and Love from The Lafferty Family. I remember Uncle Billy From days at The Cottage on The Chesapeke in Elkton, Maryland. Billy, Dicky, Mike and Tom tried to teach me to water ski, but I never got off my belly, face skiing, as it were. “Let go of the rope!” John Candy Style. We’ll miss you, Coach, but You, Sylvia and Dicky’s memory are etched in our hearts and Soul for Eternity.

Deb
Billy was a longtime friend of the Steinbaecher family as you know. Billy and I spent time together working with Steinbaecher Associates Inc., my brother Michael’s business. Billy would tell me stories about knowing our Dad Harry Steinbaecher which were so interesting to me. I learned a lot about rigging and loading equipment from Billy and enjoyed many lunches at Darrenkamps in Mount Joy with him. A lot of great memories. He will be missed. RIP Sorry for your loss Deb
