Terry Lee Weaver, 78

May 21, 2020

O’ God thy sea is great and my boat is so small. Terry Weaver, 78, of Lititz, was raised on Cabbage Hill with his twin brother. They used to shovel snow, go door to door selling soft pretzels, worked as busboys and were golf caddies. He is the son of the late Chester L. Weaver and Anna Mary (Huss) Weaver of Manor Street and Quaker Hills. He was active in Midget baseball and with his brother played for Watt & Shand’s, Hamilton Watch, and Hagar’s Store.

Upon graduation for J.P. McCaskey in 1959, where he played soccer all 3 years, Terry entered the U.S. Navy. He sailed the North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific Ocean. He was stationed in Washington DC and Japan. He rose to the rank of Chief Petty Officer and was awarded the Navy Commendation and Navy Achievement Medals along with Good Conduct Medals, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Gallantry Cross, and the Vietnam Action Unit Citation. He was involved with the Cuban Missile Crisis, assassination of JFK, Cold War, Vietnam Conflict, and the return of Vietnam POWs.

After a 20-year career in the Navy, Terry returned to Lancaster and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in the Maintenance Dept. on Harrisburg Pike as a craft employee and supervisor for 22 years. He later worked at the Overlook Gold Course for 10 years and was part-time for the Manheim Township School District.

Terry was surrounded by his pets; German Short Hair Pointer, Golden Retrievers, Chocolate Labs, and Tux the cat. He was a member of Rattlesnake Camp on Hyner Mountain along the West Branch of Clinton County. He loved hunting and fishing with his father and close friends. He was also involved in a bowling league and golf league. He has shot his age many times. He enjoyed his trips to Myrtle Beach and his Navy reunions. Terry was plagued with a sense of humor throughout his life and passed it on to anyone who could understand his love of life and love of people. Terry loved his country and flew the American Flag every day.

Terry’s famous “poppyanese” was well loved by his children and grandchildren and will be missed.

Surviving is Terry’s loving wife of 30 years, Judy Weaver, his children; Matthew S. Weaver, Michelle L. Weaver, and Mark Barto, and his grandchildren; Jacinda, Amir, Gavyn, and Eden. He is also survived by his twin brother, Jerry Weaver, his sister, Patricia Young, and many nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved companions; Sailor, Cruiser, Cruiser, and Storm.

Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Service on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 1:00pm at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery, 435 Manor Ave. Millersville., where Terry will be receiving full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the USO at PO Box 96860 Washington, DC 20077-7677 or to the Water Street Mission at 210 South Prince Street, Lancaster, PA 17603.

Judy. I’m Gerry Warmkessel’s daughter and I just tried to call Terry to tell him we moved my dad to skilled care. The number didn’t work for Terry so I looked him up and found out he passed away. I’m shocked and heart broken. Please accept my deepest sympathy. My Dad loved Terry.

Terry had many great qualities but the one that I will always remember and admire was his dedication to friendship.  Our friendship started when I was stationed in Kamiseya 2/64 – 3/66.  Our wivies became friends at the many Navy reunions.  In 2009 Elaine and I had pleasure to spend the day with Terry and Judy in Lititz.  We communicated frequently and I will miss the cards, email and phone calls we got from him on special occassions (usually all three).  This unique friend will be missed.

I would like to thank all for posting these great condolences for my twin brother. I remember the good times in Japan as well for I was stationed six miles away at Atsugi NAS before picking up the heavy cruiser, USS Saint Paul (CA-73). Followed the TV Memorial Day Veteran Ceremonies last evening and found a Taps video afterwards to watch along the Viet Nam Memorial. Thinking of the Wall metaphorically, we are all shadows on the wall of time. Terry cast a good shadow throughout his life. So glad the funeral services will be full military honors for I have attended similar Veteran services locally the last several years at a nearby Assisted Living center. Sent Terry a box of goodies last year to share with his veteran friends from a group out Chatsworth, Ca. helping Vets called Operation Gratitude. So with gratitude, thanks for everything brother for you will be surely missed. RIPJerry L. Weaver USN ETN2 64-68 Retired.

I had the pleasure of meeting Terry over 30 years ago when we bowled on the same team together.  He always had a great sense of humor and always made me laugh whenever I saw him.  I will miss him.  My sincere sympathy to the family.  Judy you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Judy and family when I heard about Terry’s passing I went to my front yard and lowered my flag to half mast in honor and respect for Terry.  I met Terry in 1965 when the Navy  trasferred me to Kamiseya, Japan,  We became fast and long time friends even after we both left Japan.  The only bad thing was Terry stayed on the East Coast when he got out of the Navy and I was on the West Coast, but GOD made telephones for Terry and me to keep in contact.  He was such a good friend. Every year I would receive birthday and anniversary wishes from my friend.  I will miss his conversations, sense of humor and his laughter.  GOD Bless You Terry Weaver, my shipmate.

Dear Judy and Family, Terry was my best friend and we enjoyed a lifelong friendship beginning as a classmate at McCaskey high school.  He was my best man at my marriage to Rose Marie in August, 1965. During the intervening years we corresponded by mail and kept abreast of our careers and families.  We honor him for his service to his country as a member of USNAVY. Our prayers and thoughts to you Judy, twin brother Jerry, sister Pat and his children and grandchildren.  He will be missed. Joe and Rose Marie Moore

Condolences to the Weaver family. I knew Terry from the golf league we played in, and played many rounds together. He was always joking and giving you a hard time about being in a branch of the  military, other than in the Navy. The golf course will be alot quiter without Terry. He will be missed.

Ronnie & I want to express our sincere sympathy to Judy & family.  Ronnie served with Terry & others, who expressed their sympathy here also, in Kamiseya, Japan during the Vietnam war.  It was also a pleasure for me to meet and visit at the reunions in various places.  Terry had a sense of humor, an infectious smile, and a love for life.  He will be missed by many, including his Kamiseya friends and his family.  Judy, please know you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers as you go through the difficult days ahead.

We were neighbors with Judy and Terry Weaver for many years.  I will always remember him with a constant smile and laughing, and his love for dogs.  Anytime he would see me walking my black lab Jake, he would call out to him and Jake would go running, dragging me behind.  Both he and Judy knew my son from high school and would also talk to him when they went by in the car, always joking and teasing him about something.  I knew my son had a good pair looking after him at school.  Their yard was always beautiful with decorations and flowers, and I remember their pets running around the back yard.  Looked like everyone had a beautiful and happy life and I know he will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Judy and the family.

I have soo many good stories about Terry. Our families use to camp at different places in Delaware, during the 50’s. Between him and Chet, we were constantly entertained, those summers. I truly offer my condolences. I really liked your family and use to tell my wife, about the times we spent with each other.

Shipmate, colleague and friend – R.I.P.  Together in our youth in Kamiseya in the mid 60s and in contact ever since.  Never was a Kirin beer or glass of Akadama we didn’t like.  Kamiseya was our passage into adulthood where lifelong frienships were made.  In our 20s, bulletproof and untethered.  It was a special time of indelible memories, all good ones when it came to Terry.  He had a unique and infectious laugh and a genuine sense of humor that everyone admired.  Gone to the Goat Locker upstairs where he will make new friends and meet old ones.  Although we have not met but once since Kamiseya, we corresponded frequently, and I miss him very much.  Fair winds and following seas shipmate.  My sincere and deepest comndolences to Judy, whom I never met.  Terry was the greatest, but you know that already.

I had the pleasure of knowing Terry for about 35 years.  Our friendship began at a reunion of his old Navy shipmates from Kamiseya, Japan.  I looked foward to those get-togethers every few years and I still miss the shipmates from those days.  Our wives enjoyed them as much as we did.  I pray for Terry and his family.  I also pray that I will be one of his friends that gathers for the greatest reunion of all in Heaven.  I look forward to seeing him again along with several of our other shipmates or Tomo’s as he always called us.  May God Bless him.
