Simon John “Sam” Elzinga, 80
August 27, 2025
Simon John “Sam” Elzinga, 80, of Marietta, PA, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, at Luther Acres in Lititz, PA. Born in Koudum, Netherlands, he was the son of the late John and Trina (Hoekema) Elzinga. He was married 55 years to his beloved wife Judith L. (Aupperlee) Elzinga.
Sam was a graduate of Manchester High School in Haledon, NJ. Shortly after graduation, Sam enlisted in the US Air Force and served honorably from 1964-1968, being stationed in Texas and Okinawa. He worked for Bell Telephone, later known as Verizon, as a central office technician until his retirement. Sam loved being called Pake, the Dutch word for grandpa, by his grandchildren. Attending all of their sporting events, music concerts and special occasions was always a top priority for him. He took pride in doing yard work and gardening, and enjoyed taking trips around the country. He attended Westminster Presbyterian Church for many years, was a member of the American Legion and Telephone Pioneers of America.
In addition to his wife Judy, Sam is survived by 2 children: Peter Elzinga (Stephanie) and Kristen Ridge (Michael); 4 grandchildren: Robert Elzinga, Mikayla Ridge, Megan Elzinga, and Mia Ridge; and sister Jane Lindemulder. He was predeceased by his siblings, Piery Moens and Andrew Elzinga.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 8, 2025, at 11 AM at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601. The family will receive guests beginning at 10 AM. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Sam’s name to Luther Acres Benevolent Fund, 600 E Main St, Lititz, PA 17543.

Dad, our hearts are broken. But even in sorrow, we can’t help but be so grateful for you. You were a pillar of strength and a wellspring of unshakeable love, and we’re so proud of the life you built.
Your faith life was consistent. You had such a great outlook on the world, Dad. You loved the simple things, like trips to parks, beaches, or a good ball game, and you found so much joy in watching your family grow. You built a family not of blood, but of love, and you made all of us feel so loved and known. You literally were a rock for so many of us, always willing to offer a helping hand or ear.
As we say goodbye, we’ll celebrate the wonderful man you were. Your compassion, generosity, and appreciation of this wonderful world will be in our hearts forever. We’ll miss you so much, but we will keep you in our hearts every day. Mike Ridge (Favorite son-in-law)
