Sharon Lynette Gordon, 71

January 19, 2018

Sharon Lynette Gordon went home to be with the Lord on January 19, 2018 in Columbia, PA., in her 72nd year. She had suffered for several years with gastrointestinal disorders, severe lumbar spine nerve damage, arachnoiditis and aspiration pneumonia. Sharon was the eldest daughter of the late Leland Worster and Anice Garmany Jones (Barrington, Rhode Island.)

Sharon was a 1964 graduate of Barrington High School from which she graduated in the top quarter of her class. She attended Wilson College and Barrington College and in 1969 she graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a major in English and a minor in Philosophy. She then worked for the State of Rhode Island as an Administrative Assistant at the University of Rhode Island’s Theater Department and also at the State Library of Rhode Island as a Library Assistant and for the federal government as a Research Assistant for EPA while pursuing her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island which she completed in 1976.

Sharon’s professional library career included working for five years at Lancaster Bible College, first as a Circulation Desk Librarian and then as a Catalog Librarian (1979-1984). She also worked for thirteen and a half years at the Lancaster Public Library as a Business Services /Reference Librarian, Catalog Librarian, and Interlibrary Loan Librarian (1985-1998). She then concluded her library career at the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors’ Library (1999-2011) first as a Circulation Desk/Catalog Librarian and later on as Library Director where she supervised the services of one full-time Librarian and a part-time Research Assistant and several volunteers.

An avid gardener, Sharon and her husband, Marty, would spend countless hours each year beautifying their flower gardens with annuals that they grew from seeds and then transplanted and her neighbors knew her as the lady who grew such gorgeous tulips and daffodils in her front yard. Sharon also collected the dried flowers she grew each year to use for decorating the shell and pine cone wreaths and plaques which she gave away to friends and family. Upon retirement, she began a career as an acrylic artist, drawing upon the knowledge she had gained from taking painting and sculpture classes at Franklin & Marshall College in order to create gifts for others.

“Everything was done unto the Lord”, Sharon always said.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Martin, of 43 years, two sons, Paul Gordon of Philadelphia and David Gordon of Lancaster and two grand daughters, Mackenzie Jane and Finley Quinn Gordon of Philadelphia, as well as eight younger siblings.

A memorial service will be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, PA on April 7, 2018 at 12 P.M. Then, after a light luncheon, interment will follow at the Manheim Fairview Cemetery. Family and friends will be received from 11A.M.-12P.M. at the church. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services, 132 South 8th St, Lebanon, PA 17042.

Condolences to the Family

January 24, 2018

Marty, my most heartfelt condolence to you and your family.  I first met Sharon when she worked at the Lancaster Public Library and I was managing the Manheim Township Library.  Our paths crossed again at the Eden Resort swim club.  Sharon was a softspoken lady with multiple talents.  Prayers for the Gordon family.
Pamela Oles
