Samuel Maurice Phillips, 85
January 27, 2016
Samuel Maurice Phillips, 85, of Lancaster, died Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the Glen at Willow Valley, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Quantico, MD, he was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Marshall) Phillips, to whom he had been married 38 years before her death in 2000. He was the son of the late Samuel Morris and Lucy Blanche (Bailey) Phillips.
Sam was a kind and caring person, described by most who met him as “the sweetest person they ever met.” He was considered family by those he knew at Willow Valley, and he, in turn, considered them his family. Sam was always quick with a joke and a smile. Loved by everyone, he will be missed by those whose lives he touched.
He was of the Christian faith, and he loved his dog, Champ.
Sam worked for many years as a chemical engineer for Sun Oil Co. until his retirement. An accomplished pilot, he was also a flight instructor, specializing in vintage aircraft. Though he owned many aircraft over the years, his favorite was his Aeronca Champ.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Grace Phillips of New Milford, CT; a son, David Phillips and his wife Maria of Nottingham, PA; 2 grandchildren: Jenna Beth and Aidan Connor Phillips, of Nottingham; and a sister, Charlotte Walck of Clearwater, FL. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Phillips.
Services and burial will be held at a later date.
Kindly omit flowers. Instead, please make a contribution to your favorite charity in Sam’s memory.
The family would like to thank the staff at Willow Valley for their loving care and companionship given to Sam during his stay there.
