Sally Spohr Hawthorne, 62

Born May 4, 1951 and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Daughter of Robert (who passed away in 2004) & Lorraine Harrison Spohr (Lititz). The Spohr family moved to Hohokus NJ when Sally was 8 for her dad’s new job with Schrafts. Sally graduated from Ridgewood High School in the class of 1969. She received her BA in Art and Art Education at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority, participated in numerous social, athletic and community organizations and was President of the Women’s Panhellenic Council during her senior year. Sally then went on during her career to get 2 Masters Degrees; in Education at Millersville University, and in Humanities at California State University.
Sally is survived by her husband of 39 years, Lee B Hawthorne (Lititz) whom she met at DePauw, a son Brian Spohr Hawthorne, along with wife Jennifer Rose Hawthorne and 15 month old grandson Jack Harrison Hawthorne (Baltimore, MD), and daughter Julie Hawthorne Padgett along with her husband David Andrew Padgett and 2 grandsons, Charles Dean Padgett, 2 ½, and Henry Byrnes Padgett, who is just 2 weeks old (Boston, MA). She is also survived by her mother, Lorraine Harrison Spohr (Lititz) and brother Mark, along with his wife Deborah (Tahoe City, CA), 6 nieces and nephews, and one grand-niece.
Early in Sally’s career she worked for Studio K in Lancaster and designed the wrappers for Whatchamacallit candy bars and Otter Pops frozen treats. When the kids were young she was a substitute teacher for Manheim Township and Warwick school districts. For the last 20 years she has taught at the Art Institute of York, PA, formerly known as Bradley Academy. Besides teaching students, Sally was also Director of Faculty Development where she mentored new teachers and worked to improve the classroom skills and effectiveness of all faculty members.
Sally was also heavily involved in the youth programs and served as an elder and Sunday school teacher at Central Presbyterian Church in Downingtown PA and Highland Presbyterian in Lancaster.
The Hawthorne family and the Art Institute have created a memorial fund in Sally’s name to be used to create the annual Sally S Hawthorne Faculty Excellence Award to inspire, recognize and honor the best teachers at the Art Institute of York, PA. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Sally’s memory through contributions to The Education Foundation, 210 Sixth Avenue, 33rd Floor, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 (note on your check that the donation is for the Sally Hawthorne Faculty Excellence Award).
A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Saturday November 9, 2013 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz with Pastor Dale Marx officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be private.

Condolences to the Family

I just heard of Sally’s passing from a mutual friend with whom we attended high school. We were among a group of recent grads who spent a week together at a friend’s home onLong Island Sound. Sally was a delight to be around every second, and her smile lit up everything (and everyone) within 100 miles. I have no doubt you heard that countless times about her! While I am fortunate to have that lasting memory of her, I am sorry for your loss.

To Lee and the Hawthorne Family,
I am very sorry that I unable to attend the memorial service for Sally due to a anther engagement. I had worked with Sally for many years and I can say that her stregth and dedication were a strong asset for the Art Institute of York.
Her sense of humor and the rapport she had with the students will be greatly missed. I know that there isn’t a lot that anyone can say to ease the pain, other than she was a good person with a good heart.
Please accept my heart felt condolences.

Sally was a big inspiration in my art and in my life. I learned so much from her at Ai. In addition to being a wonderful educator, she was also a caring, fun, and energetic woman who will be missed.
