David W. Ruoff, 83

January 01, 2025

David W. Ruoff, age 83, originally from Shillington, PA, passed on to his heavenly home while under hospice care at Ephrata Manor on January 1, 2025. He was surrounded by family and holding hands with his beloved wife, Maria, who he referred to as his “Dream Girl.” David was the only child of Sara (Willis) and Stanley Ruoff. Dave graduated from Gov. Mifflin High School in 1959 where he played football and was part of the first Wrestling team.

He then served in the Army with the 82nd Airbourne and was a proud member of the Special Forces as a Green Beret. Dave was in the insurance business for over 55 years founding Financial Alternatives in 1974. He was proud to be a General Agent with Kansas City Life for 50 years. Dave loved hunting, biking and was a member of the Kettle Creek hunting camp in Tioga County where he developed many friendships at this treasured getaway.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughter Tara, wife of Dr. Donald Fausnaught of Brownstown and his son Jim Ruoff, husband of Terri (Gallagher) Ruoff of Exeter Township. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren Zack, Cole and Rayne and great grandchildren Tanner and Beckett. Dave was preceded in death by his loving granddaughter, Ali.

Dave was a family man who lived for his children and grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed all of their activities. Dave was affectionately known as “Poppi” and was a natural comedian, truly one of a kind. As per Dave’s wishes, his body was gifted to science via Humanity Gifts Registry. Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Dave’s honor (www.T2T.org).

Maria,
My sister and I met Dave at one of KCL’s annual conferences for GA’s. He was the sweetest person I’ve ever met; so helpful and kind. We became fast friends. I’m deeply sad and so sorry for your loss. Dave was a great man and he loved you so much.
Dave, may you rest in peace with our Heavenly Father and thank you for being my friend. We will miss you greatly. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Dear Maria, Tara and Jim
I am so taken back by your husband Dave and dad’s passing. Throughout my life Dave was thought of so very often. He was a hero when I was a child and a dear friend as I grew into adulthood. Every time we numbed into each other around town was full of laughs and warmth. He will remain one of the greatest men I have known. I am saddened by his loft but smile at his memory. Maria, when the time is right please send an email. It would be a pleasure to share some memories of Dave together. God Bless each of you.

Dear Maria: I read with great saddness about Dave passing. You both are very special to me and I will miss not hearing Dave’s voice.  So many times over the years we sat together or were on the phone together trying to do the best we could. If there is anything I can do for you please let me know.
God bless, he is in heaven now.
Love
John

Maria, you probably won’t remember me; I worked in the office of the Richard Hartman Ins. Agency-Penn Mutual, on Kenhorst Blvd. in Shillington and got to know Dave when he came to work there.  I remember him as being a “hoot” to work with and knew him as a ‘go-getter’.  I am so sorry for your loss; keeping you and your family in my prayers.

I am heartbroken to hear of my friend Dave’s passing. I owe my insurance career to him. He took a chance on a clothing salesman who was going nowhere. I will be forever grateful for his kindness and the time he took to mentor me. He truly was one of a kind.

Dear Maria….
Mary and I send our heartfelt sympathies to you and the family. I spoke to Dave the day he was going in for surgery. Was not aware of his health issues. In spite of that he gave me some insurance information that I needed. Our roots go back to the 50’s when Dave’s aunt, as a nurse, helped my mother recover from a serious illness. In the 80’s Dave dragged me, kicking and screaming, into the insurance business.  He was an inspiration and dear friend from then on. I will miss him. Please take care of yourself, and take comfort knowing so many others share in your loss.

Dear Maria and family,
I’m so very sorry for your loss—our loss, too. As I wrote on The John Updike Society website, Dave meant a lot to us Updike lovers. He was one of a core group of six that was primarily responsible for the creation and operation of The John Updike Childhood Home. But most of all, he quickly became a dear friend whose jokes, exhuberance, and can-do attitude I will greatly miss. You have my deepest sympathies.

Maria and family, I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dave’s passing.  The last time we talked he and Maria were moving to Ephrata Manor.  He would call from time to time throughout our many years and I never hung up the phone without a laugh and shaking my head at one of his stories.  I’ll miss you Dave.  Maria and family, of whom Dave was so proud, my deepest condolences.

My deepest condolences to Dave’s family, especially to his wonderful wife Maria.  I may have been his last good friend that he made, as I was his neighbor for 4 years in Cumru Twp prior to their move to Ephrata.  Dave was an incredible person who was very kind to me and could make me laugh with his stories.  I could tell how much he cared for Maria as she too declined with her health issues.  May Dave rest in peace knowing how many people he made a difference for in his life.
