Roderick J. O’Day, 86
June 30, 2017
After a full life, Roderick (Rod) O’Day, 86, was granted eternal rest on June 30, 2017 at Mennonite Home, Lancaster, PA. Born March 23, 1931 in Lancaster, Rod was the son of the late John and Reba O’Day. He graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School in 1949, where he was a standout athlete on the football and track and field teams. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, where he met and married Rosa. They were married for 61 years at the time of her death in October of 2015.
Following his Air Force service, Rod returned to Lancaster and studied at Franklin & Marshall College and what is now Millersville University. He later was employed at Bell Telephone, where he worked for 34 years until his retirement in 1987. He was also a long-time member of the Lancaster Liederkranz, the Knights of Columbus, and the Beer Barons softball team. In addition to cherishing his family, one of his great joys was traveling the world with his beloved Rosie.
In addition to his wife, Rod is predeceased by a sister, Patricia Gayley. Rod is survived by three children, Michael P. O’Day, Lancaster; Eileen P. Sosa, wife of Milner Sosa, Columbia; and Steven P. O’Day, husband of Cece O’Day, Millersville; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. They remember Rod as a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, 441 N. George St. Millersville, PA. Visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30. A private interment will follow at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Rod’s memory to Outreach Paraguay, 761 Chickies Rd., Columbia, PA 17512.
