Richard M. Gutter, 98

April 06, 2023

Richard “Dick” Gutter, 98, of the Willow Valley Communities, died April 6, 2023. Dick was born in Brooklyn, New York, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Purdue University and was an electrical engineer. Dick loved people, history, wood carving, and lifelong learning. He was well known at Willow Valley for his meticulously carved life-size birds, his positive attitude, and great sense of humor.

Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Cecily, and their son, David. He is survived by his daughter, Irene; his daughter-in-law, Sarah; two grandsons, two great-grandchildren, and dear friends at Willow Valley.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Dick’s name to the Willow Valley Communities Charitable Foundation. Services will be private.

Condolences to the Family

Dick was a very talented man and one of the nicest. I enjoyed conversations with him about the stunning bird carvings he created. When I told him I had a favorite, he talked about the details of its creation. In one of our conversations, I mentioned my parents and Dick asked if they were both still living. That led to an interesting discussion about age, and Dick revealed that he was “even” older than my father. His smile was engaging and he remained interested in the people around him. He will be missed!   Terri Asche

My wife, Elizabeth and I extend our deepest condolences to you.  Dick, Cecily  and us moved into WV about the same time.  We met and had lunch together on a pre move in bus tour of Lancaster city, and we became friends at the very beginning.  Dick was forever trying to get me involved in carving, but I was too busy to be able to spend the time.  I was Chaplain of WV at the time, but we still remained friends.  Never would have lived up to his work, just great carvings.  After Cecily’s passing, we since had dinner together several times and always enjoyed his presence and conversation. We will miss him, a good friend
Sincerely,
Rev, Dr. Louis & Elizabeth Palmieri
